According to online real estate company Opendoor.com, the top honor goes to a community in Massachusetts. Somerville was recently ranked number one on the list for 2023. Not only that, but it was the only place in New England to make the list this year. The website points out this year’s list of “Family-Friendly Cities” reflects a greater emphasis on community and simple living. According to Opendoor.com, families still want to be able to access the amenities of a major city, but they also want to live close enough to recreation, parks, and entertainment that’s kid friendly. The number of parks in Somerville certainly helped put it at the top of the ranking, because Somerville has 60 parks. According to Opendoor.com, that means everyone who lives there is within a 10-minute walk of at least one of those parks. That’s well more than what many other cities and towns have to offer. Along with parks, OpenDoor.com also looked at nearby things such as gardens and museums, playgrounds and picnic sites, swimming pools, schools, and community centers. Only about two miles north of Boston, Somerville has walkable neighborhoods and new mixed-use development. At the same time, its close enough for residents to enjoy all that the larger city of Boston has to offer in terms of other nearby museums, restaurants, family-friendly entertainment options, and more. Somerville is home to Tufts University and also home to popular Assembly Row, which is where you’ll find dozens of shops and restaurants, plus family-friendly sites too, including a LEGO Discovery Center, a movie-theater, and a two-level event space with bowling, shuffleboard, and a full arcade.
