It may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Cape Cod, but the Cape Cod Canal happens to be a major attraction. From biking and fishing to wildlife viewing, there are all kinds of fun activities on and off the water. If you enjoy fishing, you can cast a line from the banks of the canal. Striped bass, mackerel and herring are all commonly found in the water. Watch out, though, for strong currents, slippery rocks and trees. The canal is also a good spot to see some area wildlife. A hike on the Bournedale Hills Trail is a good way to see the canal and some of its natural appeal. You can also take a trail up to Sagamore Hill for sweeping views of the canal’s east entrance and the bay. You can also simply sit back along the waterfront banks and watch ships and other boats navigating the canal between Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod Bay. If you feel like getting in a workout, you can always hop on the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway. This paved route runs for about seven miles. It’s a good option for biking, walking or running on either side of the canal. There are even some benches along the way if you need to take a short rest. If you need a bike, you can always rent one nearby. If you want to stop and catch your breath for a bit, you can always set up a picnic lunch at Midway Recreation Area. You’ll find a large picnic pavilion here with tables, grills and a fireplace. There are even some seasonal restrooms. If you’d like to learn more about the canal’s history and purpose, you can always make a stop at the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center. The free, family-friendly museum offers some interactive exhibits, a short film and some artifacts from the canal’s original construction.
