Sustainable new build home design with Minimal Windows Slim sliding doors
The contemporary new build home was built in Rutland, East Midlands and won multiple RIBA Awards in 2021. The modern home design blends the landscape and the building together for a biophilic home design.
Local Clipsham limestone was used alongside timber, green roofs and dry-stone walling. Sustainability was evidently a priority for the project which far surpassed the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge targets.
A mixture of locally sourced stone and wood materials from the surrounding environment were used for the external building finishes. One element of the building was curved, with a grass roof which helps to subtly blend the building with the natural environment.
The homeowners wanted to create interior spaces that had a strong bond with the surrounding landscape, including maximising the views of the outdoors and natural light within the home. The large glazing elevations achieve just this, and the overhang design at the top of the building provides shades and help to prevent overheating in the warmer months.
The living spaces on the lower floors use minimal windows slim sliding doors and the large overhang to the south façade provides passive solar shading, while coils for a ground source heat pump are laid under the beautiful wildflower meadow. Natural ventilation is provided by the central courtyard and the interior environment is tempered via a MVHR system.
minimal windows Sliding Doors were installed to connect the interior living space and the balcony area. The flush threshold detailing creates a smooth transition between the internal and external spaces. Slim framed glass doors increase the amount of the natural light in the living spaces whilst providing uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape.
Sliding glass doors with 21mm sightlines were paired with frameless structural glazing solutions as part of a larger bespoke glazing package form IQ Glass. Shaped structural glass panes were used on the top floor to follow the unique roofline.
The head and base frames of the aluminium sliding glass doors are concealed within the building finishes which help to increase the thermal performance of the systems. When the doors are open the flush threshold and hidden out frames allows the spaces to be completely merged, creating an indoor-outdoor living space that can be used to enjoy nature during nice weather.
Structural glazing was installed across the floor above the sliding glass door, creating frameless glass walls. More completely bespoke shaped design structural glazing was installed in different locations of the home.
All these high performance, thermally broken glazing systems provide a massive amount of natural light into the internal living space and help to highlight the modern, biophilic interior design.
