How to Use a Lawn Mower on Hills

Keeping a Lawn neat and tidy adds to the beauty of your garden or yard. The lush green space isn’t just to look at but to use, especially if you have children or dogs who enjoy playing ball! Grass grows very quickly in the summer months, so it does require quite a bit of maintenance, and that means mainly mowing to keep it trim.

Whether you have a large or small area of grass, you will need a lawnmower and one that can do the job easily and as quickly as possible. Yet there are many different types of lawnmower available nowadays, so which do you choose? In particular, which should you be looking at for your garden shape and size?

There’s also the problem of hills. Not all lawns are entirely flat, and you may have one that features hills. In the following article, we’re going to have a look for the best lawn mowers for hills within your budget. There are three main types of lawnmowers:

  • push mowers,
  • self propelled mowers and,
  • ride-on mowers.

Let’s have a closer look at each type.

All About Push Mowers

The push mower is the type that you might remember from your childhood. It’s a simple yet very usable device. We’re not talking the old style of mower that had no power, and you pushed along – that would make life difficult even on the flattest of lawns – but one that has blades underneath powered by either an electric or gas motor, but which you have to manually push along to get the grass cut. As opposed, in simple terms, the self Propelled Mower, which we will arrive at in a minute.

Is the push mower a good choice for lawns with hills? Here’s the thing: if you have a small lawn with a slight incline, it might be a cost-effective way of getting a mower to cut your grass. Anything more than a small yard – and a slight hill – and you’re going to find it hard going pushing a mower uphill. Nevertheless, a lightweight electric mower may be an affordable choice if you don’t mind a bit of hard work but consider how often you will need to mow your lawn. Are there better options? Let’s have a look!

All About Self Propelled Mowers

For many people, the self Propelled mower is the way to go, so what are they, and how do they differ from other types? A self Propelled mower may look much like the push mower, with its metal frame and body concealing the blades and rollers. These models are usually powered by small yet effective gas engines. Unlike the push mower, however, the self propelled model will also feature a gear system by which the engine drives the wheels or rollers. This gives it the power of its own and makes it easier to move around.

Is it the one for you? Once again, that depends upon the type of garden or yard you have. What we will say is that if you have a larger than average lawn, then this type of mower will make things much easier – no pushing, as the machine does it for you – and if you have hills to overcome, it will be even better for the purpose. The power will be enough to take the mower up hills with you steering it in the right direction, so you will need less effort and save time, too.

There is one thing to consider, and that’s the price. As a much more sophisticated machine, it follows that a self propelled mower will be a more expensive device and sometimes by quite a margin. However, there is no substitute for a powered mower for larger gardens and those with hills. Now, what if you have a very large lawn to deal with?

All About Ride-on Mowers

The ride-on mower has become more popular of late, especially with people who have a large area of grass to tend. For those with hills, these clever machines are a must if you do not want to walk miles while mowing the lawn! The best way to describe the ride-on mower is as a sort of miniature tractor, as they sometimes resemble such in some ways. The engine will be a bigger model than that on the self propelled mower, although not too powerful. It will also be a gas engine and will be more than capable of driving up and downhills.

One other advantage of this type of mower is that they often come with a tow hitch. This allows you to hook a small trailer up and take all your tools to where you need them, which is very handy if you happen to have some acreage to look after. They are equally useful for mowing verges along the front and side of your property and are a time-saver in every way.

Then there’s the cost; this type of mower will be considerably more expensive than any other as it is essentially a small vehicle with all that entails, but for larger areas of grass, there are many benefits. So, what is our conclusion?

Our Conclusion

Which mower is the best for dealing with hills? We will say that either of the powered variety is the one to go for if you want things to be as easy as possible and the job to take the shortest time. For an average-sized garden, a ride-on mower may be too large and won’t be helpful in jobs such as trying to keep the edges tidy, so in that instance, it is perhaps the self propelled mower that would be a wise choice.

For larger areas and those bigger gardens with hills, the answer definitely lies with the ride-on mower, and while they are more expensive, they will save you vast amounts of time and effort caring for your lawn. Check the review we linked to earlier in the article, and you’ll find a wealth of advice and details about many different models, which should help make your choice easier.
