The Local Project – St Kilda Loft by mlk design studio

Tundra Grey Limestone has long been popular amongst home-owners and designers. Its warmth, versatility, and affordable cost has seen it specified through many Melbourne homes. One of those being Elizabeth Filikotzias, who selected her bathroom natural stone supply from us for her fresh St Kilda Loft by mlk design studio. Check this feature by The Local Project.

The existing terrace home that is St Kilda Loft is reimagined through an enduring lens, peppered with masculine touches and a timeless approach throughout. mlk design studio draws from the generous scale and openness typical of lofted forms, and proposes an appropriate response to the context of the site, its volume and the personal expression of the owners.

Every home has its own distinct signature, both as a representation of its history and of the imprint left by its owners. In crafting spaces for the coming chapters, appreciating how they will be used and shaping the existing form to better connect with the surrounds can also come with some trepidation. What started as a small kitchen renovation soon grew to encompass the entirety of St Kilda Loft. With the kitchen sitting at the core of family life and acting as a major convening spot for daily living, improving this space was the primary goal. mlk design studio establishes a clear approach through space, light and palette, along with an engaged builder, to craft the resulting home.

In retaining the height of the home and its established links to both the streetscape and the dense tree canopy above, the interior works focus on capturing a contemporary spirit that supports both living with and within the natural elements.

St Kilda Loft sees the transformation and renovation of an existing three-storey townhouse in St Kilda West. In retaining the height of the home and its established links to both the streetscape and the dense tree canopy above, the interior works focus on capturing a contemporary spirit that supports both living with and within the natural elements.

Looking to iconic loft living, like in Manhattan, the main approach utilises the existing form’s warmth and familiarity to combine with more masculine touches and nuanced detailing throughout. The resulting terrace house combines tan-coloured leather and timber varieties within as well as large and uninterrupted glazing throughout that connect the interior and exterior spaces. Due to the lack of outdoor space, other elements are highlighted as a counter. An intentional strength in the high-quality finishes used throughout sees the use of natural stone, metal and timber, ensuring the home’s longevity in every gesture.

St Kilda Loft feels anchored in place through the dark and grounding materials used for its base. A lightness is then integrated by mlk design studio to reinforce connections within and outward whilst continually committing to a lasting relevance for years to come.
