Coronavirus Update: COVID-19 and Drinking Water

Based on information from the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Coronavirus (COVID-19 virus) has NOT been detected in drinking water. Americans can use and drink water as usual. The risk of COVID-19 to water supplies is low.

Can Coronavirus spread through drinking water?

The World Health Organization states that the “presence of the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in Drinking-water supplies and based on current evidence the risk to water supplies is low.”

Currently, the CDC believes COVID-19 is mainly spread person-to-person by people who are in close contact with each other, or when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Is tap water safe to use for hand washing?

Since Americans can use and drink water as usual, it’s okay to use tap water to wash your hands. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, please wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Read CDC’s handwashing guidance.

I’m worried about my drinking water – what should I do?

At the current time, the presence of the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies.

If you receive water from a public water utility, please contact your provider to learn more about the treatments that are being used. Treatments may include filtration and/or disinfectants (such as chlorine) which remove or kill pathogens before they reach your tap.

If you have a private well and are concerned about pathogens such as viruses in drinking water, you may want to consider treatments that remove bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

In all times, we strongly encourage the use of water filtration systems to ensure that you are protected against contaminants. We’re happy to help you find a water filtration system. Please give us a call on (760) 525-2724 and a member of our service and support team will get you sorted.
