Moving into a New House? Here are 16 things to do ASAP

You followed your Moving plan right to the minutest detail, and now, you are in your new House.

First of all, congratulations! You are about to begin your exciting journey at your new home. However, it might be too early to celebrate. You first need to settle down and get your new house in order.

Wondering how?

Here’s a simple plan to help you set up your new home sweet home successfully.

1. Before the move - Get your priorities straight and make a list

It is important to stay focused and complete your tasks in a prioritized manner. The stress and anxiety from moving can easily confuse you and you might end up mixing upon stuff. Take a notebook and write down all the taste you will be doing right from booking a removalist to moving into the new house.

Prioritize all tasks on the basis of urgency and set yourself up for speedy and easy assimilation in your new house.

2. Find your fuse box and main water valve

Now locate the circuit breaker box and the main water valve. You may or may not need them but you absolutely should know where they are at the time of emergency. And believe me, emergencies always come unannounced. You won’t have to search for your fuse box then.

Label each circuit breaker accordingly and see if water valves are functioning properly.

3. Get your utilities running

If you have not arranged it in advance or you check and something is not connected, well the first thing you need to do is get the utilities Running. Call utility companies to get your electricity, water, and gas running, first thing first.

4. Check your delivery boxes

Yes, you book a removalist and they take utmost care of your belongings. Yet, it makes sense to check all your delivery boxes. Make sure you have received all of them in the right condition. It would be great if you had made a list of your boxes while packing and can tally with the list upon receiving.

5. Open Essentials first

Now begins the marathon of opening packed boxes. And remember it is a marathon, not a 100 metres relay race. So be wise and endurance counts. Look for the boxes that have essentials and open them first. You might want to take a bath and relax first. So check for the box you labeled “bathroom”. Same for kitchen essentials if you want to have a hot cup of coffee before getting on other tasks.

6. Secure your home

Yes, this should be your top priority. Check all locks to make sure they are functioning properly. Also, make sure only you and your trusted family members have access to the keys that allow entrance into the house. Double-check all windows, smoke detectors, and fire alarms. Make sure you have at least one fire extinguisher on your floor.

7. Got a child? Baby proof your house

If you have a baby with you, get your house baby proofed. It is very easy to forget about this important task in the hustle-bustle of settling down in your new house.

8. Your pets deserve your attention

Set your pets up in their new home. They might get a bit anxious from moving to a new location. Make sure they have clean drinking water and food accessible at all times.

9. Get your major appliances running

The next on your list should be to get your major appliance running. Refrigerators are one of the most fragile items to shift to a new location.

Connect and get your appliances like refrigerator, microwave, TV, washing machine, and dishwasher running. You might need a technician to help install AC.

10. Unpack remaining items

So, set up the basic essentials? Now you can get to the remaining items and unpack them. Sort your wardrobe, living room, bedroom, and kitchen. If you feel you are excruciatingly slow, you can hire a professional unpacking team. Or, ask your friends for help.

11. Fill up groceries

Now that you are almost settled, locate the nearest grocery store and get familiar with it. Introduce yourself to the local grocery shop owner. Fill your kitchen pantry with day-to-day essentials.

12. Inform everyone about your address change

Register your new address with the post office online. Get it changed on all your important documents like bank papers, credit card statements, and voter registration card.

13. Locate a healthcare provider near you

You can ask for recommendations from your previous healthcare provider. Make sure the new one is within accessible range during emergencies. Book an appointment and have a little chat before you finalize your future physician.

14. Meet and greet

So, happy and excited after settling in your new house? There is an important task pending. We all are social beings and it makes sense to live in a happy community. Go over to your new neighbors and introduce yourself. Having a good relationship with your neighbors will make the acclimatization process a lot easier. And you will have someone to seek guidance from regarding the neighborhood.

15. Get your vehicle registered and license transferred

If you moved into a new state, do not forget to register your vehicle there.

16. Know your house

Time to be the Sherlock Holmes. Get your magnifying glasses on and thoroughly inspect the house. Look for faults like plumbing leakages, cracks, and molds, if any. You will need to correct these as soon as you set yourself up properly.

I hope you have a great experience in your new place.
