Every Adult Needs A Craft Office

When Johanna Basford, the illustrator behind the Secret Garden Colouring book received her OBE – Order of the British Empire –, Prince William shared a secret with her. He let slip that his wife Kate loves her colouring book. Basford was over the moon, but more importantly, recognise the importance of the colouring industry very early. Her first book, Secret Garden, has sold more than one million copies. Should the sales slow down any time in the future, Basford only need to remind her audience that colouring could bring them a little closer to Kate Middleton! Let’s face it; the anecdote makes kate appear even friendlier and more human than she already is. But, whether you enjoy catching up with the Royals or not, you can’t deny that there’s something fun about Craft activities. While not everyone loves colouring, everyone has a craft hobby that keeps them sane outside of work. Unlike Kate, you can’t just grab a desk inside Buckingham Palace to indulge in your craft passion. You need to find the best craft spot for you!

Craft hobbies encourage creative thinking

Sometimes, your hobby naturally creates the space you need. Someone who loves to include nature in their creations, for instance, is likely to find themselves building a cozy treehouse in the back of the garden. When nature is your main source of inspiration, you can’t get enough of it; you make it the ultimate craft hobby. A word of warning, however, an adult-size treehouse requires a lot of hard work. Landscape painters, DIY builders, and bird watchers find nothing more exciting than a house that extends their connection with Mother Nature. You need to find a practical solution to make your childhood dream of a castle in the tree come true; in other words, your craft spot is the cumulation of your passion, your original thinking, and your practical mind.

Learning a home craft is about developing your toolbox

Gardeners and home decor crafters also need a place where they can work. As a rule of the thumb, home crafters tend to fall in love with the skills they develop to maintain their household. From painting walls to keeping the lawn green and smooth, their creations are part of their everyday life. As a result, they need a secure place that can hold their craft equipment, such as garden sheds or a furnished garage. More often than not, they can spend a lot of money on finding the right tool.

Craft helps you to unwind after a long day

Last, but not least, the third type of crafters pick a hobby that they can easily fit in their busy schedule. Just like Kate, they focus their attention on small things they can keep in their handbag or by the coffee table at home. From relaxing crochet patterns to delicate bullet journals, the act of creating is about finding inner peace. Where they are doesn’t matter. They operate mostly with limited equipment. They don’t need to keep their creations once the work is done either.

What is your craft place? Whether you need a place to connect, a secure area for your equipment or work-in-progress, or simply a quiet moment to centre your thoughts, your choice of location says a lot about your relationship to crafting
