Most Popular Hinges: Barrels, Butts & Butterflies

When it comes to Hinges, there are many different types. But the three most popular styles are the barrel, the butt and the butterfly.

Let’s take a closer look at each type of hinge is and explore their most common usages.

Butt hinge

Butt hinges are one of the most commonly used recessed hinges. A typical butt hinge is six inches or shorter. Butt hinges are comprised of a pair of matching “leaves,” where one is attached to something fixed (often a door jamb) and the other is attached to the object that will move (the door).

While a butt hinge has many uses, they are most often used to mount and operate commercial doors or doors found in residential houses.

Butterfly hinge

Butterfly hinges (also known as surface mount hinges) are attached to the outside of the object they are allowing to open. Butterfly hinges come in many different sizes, shapes and patterns.

Butterfly hinges aren’t as strong as other hinges; therefore, they’re most often used for lightweight doors and boxes.

Barrel hinge

Barrel hinges are comprised of two barrel pins that are set into the edge of a door, window or other frame. These pins are then joined together at a pivot, which allows the object to open and close.

Barrel hinges are a type of hidden hinge that is typically used for light applications. Most often this is small cabinet doors or the lid of a chest.
