You’ve heard it a million times, but presenting clear floors and surfaces along with tidy garages and gardens really does make a difference. Tidy, spacious-looking homes sell far more quickly than those that appear cramped or with little storage.

There’s another bonus, too. When you have fewer possessions cluttering surface or storage areas, quick tidy-ups when viewers give little notice are much easier and faster.

The quickest way to declutter is to go through possessions and divide them into two types – those you don’t need or want, and those you want to keep but not have on show.

Items you’ll want to keep could include:

• Furnishings that don’t quite fit but which have special meaning in your life.
• Clothes you’re not currently using but will want in a few months.
• Out of season sports kit, camping gear or garden machinery that’s lying dormant.
• Box files containing important documents that you need to keep safe.

 Finding Those Hidden Spaces

Every home has some Hidden tucked away corners that could be used better.

• Under the stairs – often a dumping ground, but if shelves or small drawer racks are slotted in, shoes, cleaning materials, tools or toys are neat and contained.
• Under or over kitchen cabinets – most wall cabinets stop well below the ceiling, leaving loads of space for additional shelves where little-used kitchen equipment or decorative ceramics could be housed. Beneath cabinets, the space is almost always blocked off. Replacing kickboards with hinged doors would provide lots of hidden storage.
• Other little used areas include above doorways. A shelf here would be ideal for a small library.
