The government of UK has included cannabis to the list of medicines of National Health Service for its patients from 1st November. According to Home Office, now specialist doctors can prescribe it to their patients. Whereas campaigners have suggested the government to reconsider the categorization of cannabis as Class A product as it does not have any therapeutic or medicinal importance.

Because of the cases like confiscation of illegal Cannabis medication for epileptic children has changed the mood of the people in UK.

Sajid Javid, Home Secretary, said that they have sympathy with the families desperately searching for some treatment. He also asked the UK government to review the effects of cannabis medication on urgent basis.

Dr. Derek Tracy, government Drugs adviser and pharmacist, is of the view that cannabis can be prescribed for the patients with multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and pain etc. He further said that they are planning to improve the laws for certain products that can be toxic as well as helpful in tackling different conditions.

In the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs Tracy further said that the council is looking on the harm of cannabis after recommending it for medicinal use. Though some drugs can be harmful for health but their benefits also cannot be ignored.

Germany has legalized medicines derived from cannabis in 2017 but patients usually do not get them either due to short supplies or reluctance of doctors in this regard.

According to Tracy, it is too early to say that UK government has legalized the cannabis medication after seeing their better results in Germany or Canada or any other country or by learning from their mistakes.

With the help of the Families4Access group Mahboob Haniffa has started a campaign to support the legalization of cannabis medicines as he wants to make his 5 years old baby happy and active. Ayub was inhaling fluid amniotic into his lungs since his birth causing partial blindness and was diagnosed of epilepsy at the age of 2 years.

According to Haniffa, to keep him free from weekly seizures three medicines are given to him frequently.

According to the users of cannabis medicines, they have considerable effect on the frequency and number of seizures due to anti-epileptic effect of cannabidiol in cannabis.

Dr. Mike Barnes, neurophysician and brain rehabilitation specialist has praised the effectiveness of cannabis as it works with the internal network of brain’s neurotransmitters which play a great role in the physical functions and put the thing right by working with your own system.

According to Barnes, the effectiveness of cannabis medicines can reduce the number and frequency of seizures considerably in many cases. However, Haniffa knows that powerful drugs should be prescribed in right dosage by qualified practitioners instead of using illegal cannabis drugs. She was ready to try legal cannabis drugs prescribed by a doctor on her son. She was trying to search a right medicine to make his son happy by curing his ailment with proper treatment.

Carly Jayne Barton, deputy director of the United Patients Alliance, said by trying to be well by using cannabis medications no one should be criminalized. In 2011 she was diagnosed for fibromyalgia after a stroke and since then she was medicating herself with cannabis drugs. Doctors had prescribed various opioid based drugs to control the pain in her limbs and legs that have stopped working but none of them worked. But, after smoking cannabis once before going to bed, most of her inactiveness went away forever as she has no pain since 5 years.

According to Barnes, though most of such drugs are horrible but they can be considered to cure your chronic pain as they work effectively to mobilize you.

According to various studies, though cannabis is a toxic product but one cannot die from it whereas overdose of opioids can be fatal which reduced the prescription of opioid drugs.

Though self-medication can be illegal but British police may take it leniently if it is not used secretly. The regulatory bodies in UK may use the entire plant or flowers for medication instead of its extracts.

The producer of cannabis medicines, permitted by Dutch government, Bedrocan Nederland, will be the first to introduce cannabis in the UK market. According to Tracy and Barnes this law will change the clinical use of cannabis which was difficult earlier due to lack of knowledge in this regard.
