There’s a new Church opening up in Denver, and its first meeting is scheduled for 4/20/2017. It’s the International Church of Cannabis, made up of a congregation of “Elevationists”.

While some neighboring community members are skeptical about the church, co-founder Steve Berke feels that they will be better accepted when locals begin to understand what they’re all about:

“First and foremost, this is a community church.  There are rumors that this is a rasta smoking lounge or a nightclub.  It’s not.  It’s a safe space to congregate and consume.”

The stated purpose of the church is to be “a home to adults everywhere who are looking to create the best version of themselves by way of the sacred plant.” Upcoming programming is set to include comedians, artists, musicians, film screenings and more.

Some people are concerned that the church is taking advantage of a legal loophole for religious bodies rather than being serious about being a Religion, but co-founder Lee Molloy disagrees:

“Elevationism is about elevating one’s life and spiritual self-discovery through the sacrament of cannabis.  I grew up in an evangelical, Pentecostal religion with people speaking in tongues and falling on the floor.  If those people are considered a religion, then why not us?”

But Berke says Elevationism isn’t exactly a religion in and of itself:

“Elevationism is not a replacement to your existing faith.  It’s more of a supplement to it.  You can be a Christian and an Elevationist.  You can be Jewish and Elevationist.”
