One of the healthiest chicken breeds that are recognized by the American Poultry Association is Ameraucana chicken. All breeds of chicken are equally liked and eaten by people all over the world. Chicken is not only easy to make and good in taste but also a good source of proteins. Ameraucana Chicken Breed Origin

The Ameraucana Breed of the chicken is found in all America but its origin is considered to be the south American Continent more precisely the chile. It is considered to be the most modern member among all chicken breeds as it was introduced in the early 1970s. The Araucana chicken of the chile is the parent breed of the Ameraucana chicken. But, unlike their parent breed, the Ameraucana chicken doesn’t contain the lethal allele. 

Appearance

Unlike any other chicken breeds, the Ameracuana breed is available in a variety of colours ranging from black to white and blue to brown. Some of the recognized colours of the Ameracuana breed is black, white, blue wheaten, brown, buff, wheaten, silver and blue etc.

This variety of colours makes the Ameracuana a very beautiful and attractive fowl. The face of the Ameraucana breed is covered with both beard and muffs which make them look puffed. They have slightly red eyes which make their look more deceiving, as they always look in fury.

But in reality, Ameraucana is quite a tame bird. Some observers also say that this breed has a hawk-like appearance. Their legs and feet mostly have blue to black colour. Each foot has four toes and the lower limbs are feather free.

Weight

The Ameraucana is a light bird whose weight varies from 6.5 to 7.5lb which is about 2.9 to 3.3kg (in males) and 5 to 5.5lb which is about 2 to 2.5kg (in Females).

Egg-laying Capacity

The egg-laying capacity of the Ameraucana breed is very slow. If the fowl is 18 to 20 weeks don’t expect any egg. But after 5 months when they start laying egg they would give you 3-5 eggs per weak (about 190 to 200 eggs per year).

Eggs Colour & Size

The Ameraucana breed is very famous and beloved for its pleasing light-blue coloured eggs. These beautiful light-blue coloured eggs are not very large nor very small in their size but are in the medium range.

Nutritional Facts

In the past, Ameraucana chicken and their blue eggs were famous because they believed to have low cholesterol and high proteins. But that was just a market tactic to attract people towards the blue eggs. The modern researches have shown that the blue eggs have the same nutritional components as any other egg.

Price

The Ameraucana breed costs about 20.00$ for a hen and 18.00$ for a roaster. Some people might find the price very high because it’s out of range for a normal living person, but it’s completely worthy of the beauty and health factors of Ameraucana breed and blue eggs. 

Life span

The Ameraucana breed is capable of withstanding very harsh winter weather and can live for about  7-8 years.

Ameraucana is not only confined to continents of America and South America but also available in many other parts of the world like the United Kingdom (UK) Et cetera. However, in many areas of the world, the Araucana and Ameraucana breed considered same which causes a lot of confusion.
