9 Quintessentially Portland Events For the 2nd Half of February

We’re sure you’ve probably heard the timeless proverb “Keep Portland Weird”. Since the ancient times of 2003, wise men and women from far and wide have been spreading the word in hopes of preserving Rose City weirdness for generations to come. Seriously, though, PDX wouldn’t be as awesome as it is today if it wasn’t for a bit of kookiness. And, fortunately for quirk conservationists, February offers tons of unique events to check out. Since originality is something we celebrate at Osprey’s South Waterfront Apartments in Portland, we feel quite qualified to pass along our top picks.

1. Sabertooth Micro Fest

The psychedelic culture is alive and well just a couple of miles from our South Waterfront apartments in Portland! In honor of the music genre that opened and altered minds, some of the hottest bands (Parquet Courts, Thurston Moore Group, and Giants in the Trees, just to name a few) will be playing the Sabertooth Micro Fest at Crystal Ballroom.

2. Portland ChinaTown Chinese New Year Celebration

Celebrate the Chinese New Year and the start of the Year of the Dog on February 18th at the NW Davis Festival Street. Admission is free and attendees will be treated to folkdance, Wushu, lion and dance and music with traditional Chinese instruments. The festival comes from the growing desire among Portland’s Chinese community to celebrate Portland’s Old Town Chinatown. Families are also welcome to join the traditional hands-on activities  at the CBBA building

3. Image Expo 2018

Image Comics started back in 1992 and since they they’ve continued to inspire creativity and innovation within the comic book space. Image Expo, an all day event for fans, retailers, and press to get an in-depth look under the hood, started back in 2013, and this year they’re bringing the festivities to Portland! Get to the Left Bank Annex on February 21st to get the scoop on all the thrilling series Image Comics has planned.

4. Kid Fest NW

Kids Fest NW is the Northwest’s Largest Family Expo and it’s basically a massive, all out blast for those with youngins. There’s entertainment stages, inflatable fun zones, extreme big air, a rock wall, laser tag, paintball, a cooking stage and competition, a character village with Minions, Moana, Super Heroes, Star Wars, a petting zoo, exotic animals and reptiles, and arcade, and so much more! But don’t’ worry, there’s also education and learning opportunities as well; it’s all up for grabs at KidFest NW!

5. Brewstillery Festival

The Brewstillery Festival is unlike any adult beverage fest you may have attended. At the 4th annual Brewstillery Festival, 20 Portland breweries and 20 portland distilleries have teamed to create perfect pairings. Each pairing consists of a 4oz beer pour and ¼ oz spirit taste to feature truly unique samplings of local Portland flavors. Vist the event page on Merctickets for more info on tickets and on specific pairing teams.

6. Zwickelmania

A definite plus of living in the South Waterfront is that there are often fantastic beer events happening nearby. Zwickelmania is one of the best. Every year, breweries all over Oregon open their doors for activities such as samplings, tours, and food specials. The participant list for the Portland metro area is long this year so you might want to start mapping a plan of attack asap!

7. Portland International Film Festival (February 15 to March 1)

Film buffs rejoice! It’s almost time for the 41st Portland International Film Festival. For more than three weeks, the most passionate and talented filmmakers in the world will be screening their best films for the good people of PDX. This year, 100 feature films and over 60 shorts will be presented. Festival pass prices and screenings vary so make sure to check the website for details.

8. Portland Polar Plunge

As one of the top South Waterfront apartments in Portland, we’re usually totally focused on nurturing a comfortable environment for PDX-ers. For the Polar Plunge, we’re making an exception. Portland Polar Plunge is a freezingly fun activity where courageous souls jump into the icy waters of Broughton Beach. And, it’s all for a good cause! In past years, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Special Olympics Oregon. So, do you think you’re you brave enough?

9. Raptor Road Trip on Sauvie Island

If your answer to the question about bravery and plunging into cold waters was “no”, don’t worry — there’s a less frigid event on the same day. Raptor Road Trip is a cool and unique educational experience where bird experts set up shop in four different spots around Sauvie Island. For $10, the whole family can visit each area to learn about bird watching, participate in activities, and catch glimpses of hawks, eagles, and falcons.

Osprey is a quintessentially PDX kind of community. Our Portland South Waterfront apartments are completely centered on what our residents want and need.
