A Hodgepodge Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you, Romantics.

UPDATE: Laydee's appointment at the vet is next week!

1. What does Love mean to you?

In my younger days, I had a selfish definition of what love was - Now, I realize that it is God's definition of love that matters and should be used as a gauge to keep us in check.

Love is patient,
love is kind.
It does not envy,
 it does not boast,
 it is not proud.
 It does not dishonor others,
it is not self-seeking,
 it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.
 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

2. Is love blind?

I call that denial. It's when we are blind to a loved one's faults; to our own peril as well as theirs. That's what I first think of. I don't believe it means, unconditional love. I call that sloppy agape.

3. How do you remember Valentine's Day as a kid?

A few days before, we would make Valentines for our parents. We would decorate our little mailboxes or bags to collect our Valentines. We would have a party with Moms helping out and always had pretty pink and red Valentine cupcakes and candy hearts.  Pretty much every girl hoped we would get a special Valentine from the cute boy in class - and never did! The girls loved Valentine's Day and the boys tolerated it.

Do you have any special plans for the day this year?

No special plans.

Our wedding anniversary is on the 16th. I might make a nice meal we both like - We'll play it by ear. Friday is our big day.

4 Are you a fan of the movie genre known as
'rom-com'?

Never heard of it.

What's your favorite
(or one of your favorites)?

I did like the romantic comedies when I was younger and single.  That's what we called them back in the day. Some of my favorites I enjoyed were:

If a Man Answers (Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee)
Pillow Talk
Barefoot in the Park
Send me no Flowers
Father Goose
Groundhogs Day
All the Gidget movies
All the Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon movies
Where the Boys Are (Connie Francis)
The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara

Some more recent after I was an adult:
You've Got Mail
While You Were Sleeping

As far as I am concerned, they just don't make movies like they used to.

5. What's something you recently put your heart into?

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men -
Colossians 3.23

It isn't recent - my first thought was raising my children to adulthood - raising other people's children as they entrusted me with their most precious little ones while they went to work and currently, my Marriage. Always trying to outdo each other in love and respect.

After one failed marriage, I know the pitfalls. The statistic of divorce in a second marriage for Christians is 60%.   How's that for hanging over your head? My husband and I did not want to be a statistic and we've worked hard on our fairly young marriage of 22 years. (on the 16th)  There is no doubt in my mind, that we will make it. In my first marriage, I knew after 5 years, I had made a mistake but had a child and another on the way.

Boy talk about Love is Blind Denial - I tried very hard to make it work and overlooked some terrible things until I couldn't anymore. The saying you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink,  says it all.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

For your listening pleasure.

"What the World Needs Now Is Love" is a 1965 popular song with lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt Bacharach. First recorded and made popular by Jackie DeShannon, it was released on April 15, 1965

The song's success caught the two songwriters completely by surprise since they were very aware of the controversy and disagreements among Americans about the Vietnam War, which was the subtext for David's lyrics. Bacharach continuously used the song as the intro and finale for most of his live concert appearances well into the 2000s.

Who did it better?

Jackie DeShannon or Dionne Warwick?

The song was originally offered to singer Dionne Warwick, who turned it down at the time, saying she felt it was "too country" for her tastes and "too preachy" though she later recorded it for her album Here Where There Is Love.

Brings back a ton of memories.
