For the Love of an Animal

This is my last post for 2023. I am a bit later than I usually post due to an unforeseen event. This New Year's Eve (Day) found us sitting with our Susie at the Emergency pet clinic. We were there for 3 hours.
She seems fine now, I hope. She has a terrible urge to eat plants and even fake ones and she especially loves to chow down on her annual temptation, the artificial Christmas Tree. She had thrown up part of the tree a few times - but always acted fine but 2 days ago, we noticed she was not feeling herself. She had stopped eating and drinking and she was hiding - lethargic and hadn't used the potty in over 24 hours. That's usually a sign that something is wrong. I was afraid she might have a blockage.

So we took her into the emergency clinic for pets - due to it being an emergency, there is an Emergency Fee, just to be seen. It wasn't too bad, but still that was $400. It was worth it to see if this was what I feared.

The diagnosis is she has a tummy ache - probably due to her artificial tree cravings. The Vet did not believe she had a blockage but he gave us 2 options.

1. to hydrate her through an IV and give her an anti-nausea shot and send her home - basically a wait-and-see and come back when it's cheaper.

2. to take x-rays now to see if there is a blockage - that would be another $400.

I trusted my gut and I went with option 1 only because she was looking good while we were in the office, with no fever, and she was more alert. She actually seemed like she enjoyed the whole experience. We can always bring her back should she take a turn for the worse and they won't charge us the emergency fee again.

We started driving home, and she started heaving and threw up.
Once we were home, she seemed to be better, just because it was home. About an hour later, she nibbled on some food and it looked as if she had used her litter box.

We took down the tree! Even while we were disassembling it, she came over to try and take a bite. What is it about that tree?

We've done the squirt bottle of water - I think we may need a water cannon for next year!

She's 8 years old and has been such a joy. Healthy until this little episode. At one time, while sitting in the little room, I thought, maybe she was on a food strike. Cat lovers know, that cats are famously finicky about their food. Or maybe she just felt she needed more mommy and daddy time away from the drooly dog!

We had another cat, Miss Buster who faked an illness - and it was on a holiday as well. She was fine. We also had a dog, named Sport who pulled one over on us and Laydee has done it twice!

Right now Susie is in her kitty condo, here in the office - close to me. That is a good sign and more like herself.

Have a safe New Year's Eve.
Here's to 2024!
