Surfs UP and This and That

This is my hometown of Pacifica, 20 miles south of San Francisco. I'm landlocked up here in far-northern California, in the north-central valley so I don't get to see this anymore and miss it. From November to March, when the Big Waves visit our coastline along with world-class Big Wave surfers worldwide.

It's a happening, but I wouldn't want to be standing on my deck with these monster waves coming in. No thanks. I'm a Big Wave enthusiast - enjoying those big waves from the comfort of my home.

With waves that big (they estimated 30-foot waves at my hometown beach)  it doesn't surprise me that the neighborhoods by the pier flooded. I remember on occasion, coming down Hwy 1, and the HWY being flooded. We lived 2 miles from the beach so we were good and on an uphill incline.

They didn't have this pier when I was a kid and this is in the north part of Pacifica. I lived in the south part. I've only been on the pier a few times. But if you want the really BIG waves, Mavericks is the place. 10 to 15 minutes from my Pacifica home. I read that yesterday they had 60-70 foot waves!

They're not crazy - they are surfers!

If you know any surfers, you know what I mean. They are a different breed and have their own culture.

In Other News...

I've been thinking about the New Year. My contrary self refuses to make resolutions or Words for the year. That's just not me. What I am looking at, is my 70th birthday, coming in March. Yippie. and that means a physical trip down to the DMV to take a written driver's test. So I must refresh myself with the new laws. I plan to take my first test in 2 weeks. Notice I said my first test. I don't trust that I can pass it. I read an article recently about seniors having to take the written test - and reading all the discouraging comments.

One commenter wrote:

" The questions I was faced with were so poorly written that, for the most part, I couldn’t figure out what was being asked. I had to take the test twice before I barely passed it. Age has nothing to do with the problems that the DMV tests have. The people who prepare them are incompetent. Save the DMV money and save seniors grief. Knock off the silly written test for drivers over 70."

I'm itching to start painting the hallway to get that done. I'm looking forward to a productive January, painting. At this time I have not taken down the Christmas decor - we've decided that is for New Year's Day this year! I can't wait.

Turning 70 is a good time to get my physical. I don't wait till my birthday in March - I want it done by then. I might as well get all my little annoying, age-related ailments on the table for the Doctor to decipher what needs to be done if anything, which brings me to:

Update on my Edith, and my friend Mary

Talked with Edith, my SIL - and she will be going in on Jan 2 for a procedure so they can see her spleen and liver. Her spleen is enlarged and bigger than her liver. I saw the image she texted me and it was unsettling.

My friend Mary, texted me telling me she had developed post-radiation lymphedema. Lymphedema can happen any time after surgery or radiation to the lymph nodes. The risk continues for the rest of the person's life. Lymphedema can’t be cured, but it can be managed. It's been a couple of years since her last radiation.

Wait, there's more...

My husband had his skin cancer thingy removed on his cheek and boy, it looked bad for a few days. Our DIL who is a nurse took a look at it and said it was healing. Then I found out he put aloe vera gel on it. The doctor told him not to put anything on it except for a thin coat of Vaseline. That's probably why it flared up - his cheek was hot to the touch and so red.

Not Yet...

Currently, I have a pot roast in the crock pot - it smells wonderful. I also made some Potato Salad to be eaten tomorrow. I had potatoes that needed to be used and I was craving a potato salad. I might bake a cake either today or tomorrow.

The other evening we watched Oppenheimer - the movie on TV. I thought it was awesome but I enjoy history and science.  There were a few unnecessary scenes - like why do we need to watch him have sex? No, thank you. You can always count on Hollywood to throw sex in an otherwise intelligent good movie. It just goes to show, how they think moviegoers are - shallow.

Okay, I think that is it - maybe I will check in one last time for 2023 or not. I do hope you all have a Healthy New Year, regardless.
