The Last Hodgepodge for 2023

1. Did you do more talking or more listening yesterday? Was it by choice or by necessity?

I always do more listening than talking. I'd be mute if I didn't have a blog to express myself.

Well not exactly.  Yesterday I did more listening - I went to my Alanon meeting and listened to the hurting people, approaching a difficult holiday. My heart goes out to them.

2. Are you a tea drinker? Hot, cold, or both? Flavored? What do you like in your tea? Do you make Christmas tea this time of year? What time of day do you like to sip your tea?

My favorite tea is local from Santa Cruz - Good Earth Tea - sweet and spicy. Black tea with warm notes of cinnamon and sweet bursts of orange. I like all their teas.

I started drinking it in the 70s and while I don't drink it all the time like I used to, it conjures up pleasant memories of a best friend - Lana. She has since passed.

I enjoy green tea, chamomile tea, and Lavender tea. I drink tea either in the afternoons or evening.

Like my coffee, I drink it straight up - with nothing. Lavender tea I'll have a little honey.

3. What's an activity you won't try, an event you won't attend, or an athletic challenge you won't take part in not even for 'all the tea in China'

A snake handler

4. What's something most people seem to love but is not 'your cup of tea'?

Funny. This TV show, I was hearing about from so many people that I should watch - Virgin River. Ugh!

I watched half of the first season, trying to like it. I really did. I finally couldn't take it anymore. Dysfunctional people - doing dysfunctional things. I found myself getting stressed out. This one old gal on the show, Hope was awful and she was one of the main characters. It basically was a soap opera.

5. How does your family celebrate New Year's Eve?

We don't. New Year's Eve and New Year's Day haven't been a family event since they were all kids and lived at home. Even when they boomeranged back for a couple of years, they all went out to their own parties.

The Husband and I, treat it like any other evening except that we will give the dog a trank, (to calm her for the fireworks) and are usually in bed before 10pm. Yes, we will be awakened at midnight; from all the firecrackers - wish each other a happy new year, then roll over and try and go back to sleep.

We don't watch any of the celebrations. I'm not into, deliberately making myself sad or reflective on New Year's Eve. I guard my emotions and my heart against unnecessary "New Year predictions".

On New Year's Day, I may start taking things down - or we go for a drive. I find it a boring holiday. We'll play it by ear...

I'm glad it is on a Monday so life gets back to normal by Tuesday.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Yesterday was a hectic day.  We had a handyman come out and fix a toilet and troubleshoot an outside light that was not working. The guy is like 80+ years old. Still spry but a lot slower. I guess my dog didn't like the way he walked - a bit slumped and she bit him. Fortunately, she did not break the skin. The old guy, dropped his pants for my husband to look at. My husband said he was shocked on both accounts - that Laydee would just bite him and that they guy dropped his pants!

My husband had a dermatologist appointment to remove Skin Cancer on his face. They called him and wanted to reschedule him earlier - due to a staffing shortage. He agreed. Then they called again and moved him up even earlier. That was even better. The handyman had just finished at 1:30 pm (he came at 10am) and my husband's appointment was at 2:pm. Just in time.  We didn't expect the handyman to take that long. He did a thorough job but I thought he would be done before noon! Meanwhile, the husband is fine. Skin cancer runs in his family and he just has to go in periodically to have them removed. One on his cheek and one on the side of his nose.

In Other News

It's been raining here in Sunny California - quite a bit. After all, tomorrow is the first day of winter and that's what we get here in winter. Rain and snow in the higher elevations.

We took down the Hanukkah decorations a few days ago and I have yet to decorate that table. I usually place desserts there for our dinner coming up on the 23rd.

Since everyone will be working on the 24th and 25th - my husband and I had planned to go to a movie on Christmas Eve. Our church is not having an evening service. I looked at what the local theaters would be showing - there was nothing we wanted to see.  So, we'll eat leftovers from the night before and watch a movie here at the house. Christmas Day - we're wide open. I kinda want to eat dinner at a 24-hour diner.  We did this a couple of times, and it was so nice. Many people are lonely - and will end up at a local diner. I found that they were willing to talk and share their story.

Thanks for dropping by and paying me a visit. This year was the first time I joined in, these Hodgepodges, and I have enjoyed them. I'm looking forward to next year and all that Janice has planned for it.

Until then, I hope all you Hodgepodgers have a very Merry Christmas.
