Nemrut Southsea is a Turkish Delight

Rushed back from Polka Theatre in Wimbledon last Saturday evening ('Error 404' an amazing delve into some big questions for kids, written and performed by the Excellent Daniel Bye - go see!) just in time for our 7.30 booking at Nemrut.

Well, not exactly true.  We were already running late when a numpty Aqua Cars driver decided to reverse into us while stationary on Albert Road, so it was nearer 8 by the time we arrived.  We'd warned them of the delay, which was just as well because, unlike our Wok the Duck experience of a few weeks ago, Nemrut was busy busy.

And rightly so.  Walk in and your senses are assailed by the barbecue grill to your left, spitting and sizzling with flaming kebabs and providing intensely mouth-watering spicy aromas.  If you're hungry this place will turn you inside out with desire for big meaty skewers of lamb and chicken - or veg if you're that way inclined, but really it's all about the meat.

Friendly, cafe-style, informal, delicious, exotic, and excellent value.  You couldn't ask for more.  We had starters of cold mixed mezze - amazing yoghurt haydari and home-made hummus were stars - plus sucuk, a sliced spicy sausage served in a tomato sauce.  The kebabs - chicken and lamb - were juicy and tender, spicy but not overbearingly so.  It's not rocket science food, but you still need to have experience, plenty of fire and top ingredients to produce grilled meat this delicious.

All washed down with a bottle of my favourite Turkish wine - Kavaklidere Yakut from Eastern
Anatolia - this is an easy-drinking red with firm tannins yet velvety smooth and fruit-led.  The whole meal took away the tension of our set-to with Aqua and there was a real sense of family outing about the occasion.

100% recommended by CdP, so if you haven't been then make Nemrut a destination this coming week-end.
