BMW To Replace Side Mirror With Cameras

BMW has decided to stop the use of the side mirrors in their cars. Focus reports that the German Brand will begin to install special cameras instead from 2019.

This technology has been demonstrated at a conceptual sports hybrid i8 Mirrorless for the first time, which was presented at the CES in Las Vegas. The car has no side-mirrors, and their function is performed by cameras. The pictures of the side and rear view cameras will be shown on a display placed instead of a salon mirror. The new technology improves the fuel profitability through other aerodynamic characteristics.

According to preliminary data, the first model of the German brand, which will be equipped with cameras instead of mirrors, will be restyled 7-Series. The debut of the car is expected in 2019.

Recall that BMW plans to introduce a system of autonomous driving this year. The presentation of the autopilot may take place March 7th during an official ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the German brand. It has been reported earlier that the new system of BMW is being tested in China. The principle of operation of the autopilot is not fundamentally different from that of Google and is based mainly on data received from the satellite and the uploaded cards. The prototype has already overcome a few tens of thousands of kilometers on the roads of Europe, and it was brought to China it to test the system in the complex multi-level interchanges.

The new BMW 7-Series debuted in 2015, has already received a number of systems that will enable the Bavarian autopilot. In particular, the new car can move without a driver only at low speed, such as parking or traffic.
