BMW X2 Headed To Paris

The small sports-themed SUV expected to be known as the 2017 BMW X2 will reportedly debut October’s Paris motor show. Sister model to the recently introduced second-generation X1, the X2 will become the sixth SUV model to join the BMW line-up and the second to be based on its highly versatile UKL platform the same structure that underpins the upcoming second-generation Mini Countryman.

If BMW X1 seems too ordinary for BMW, because of its front-wheel drive chassis, the company found a way to win at least the first “deficiency”. The X2 is the crossover coupe sibling to the X1 with a sweeping outline. The prototype gives a comprehensive picture of the contours and proportions of the next SUV with sporting ambitions.

Interestingly, the designers decided to no longer exploit the style of the older X6, which has been adopted by the X4 crossover. No three-volume silhouette and the “tail” of the trunk, the usual combination of a sharper roofline, more aggressively sloped rear window, a low, arching roof for sporty look. The interior will be similar layout as the X1 but with less cargo space due to the top’s design. The new X2 appears longer in the pictures, although it is probably an illusion, and the vehicle is very similar in size. BMW X4 in terms of design language. In other words, it would be a sportier version of the BMW X1. The new UKL front-wheel-drive platform is expected to bring down costs in future BMW models significantly.

Structurally, the X2 will be the same as X1 as it comes to the UKL platform and engine range: The same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, good for 228 hp and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
