Mercedes-Benz To Spend 7 Billion Euros In New Technologies

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its first car on a plug-in fuel-cell. The prototype was called crossover GLC F-Cell. It is possible that the production version will be presented in 2017. The sales of the Model could start in 2018.

The car is based on the standard version of the GLC crossover. Fitted with a lithium-ion battery pack, the new model is designed to travel up to 310 miles on a charge, and a full charge takes about three minutes. One of the rivals of this Mercedes can be a Hydrogen car from BMW. The company plans to send this car in serial production in 2020. Fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity and steam, can achieve the same dynamics as in a conventional engine model. Unlike electric cars, hydrogen cars can be charged much faster. Porsche will introduce hydrogen model as well. The official debut of the car will take place no earlier than 2019.

Previously, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the premiere of the first electric crossover concept will be held in October at the Paris Motor Show. The prototype assembly is conducted at the company’s plant near Stuttgart. The serial version of the model that is scheduled to release in 2019, will be meant to be a competitor of Tesla Model X.

It was reported earlier that Mercedes-Benz could create a separate sub-brand for environmentally friendly cars in the future. The new line will compete with BMW i Series. “We will have three electrical vehicles of B class and two smart modifications by the end of this year. At the end of next year, we will launch a fuel cell vehicle of the next generation, which is a vehicle based on the GLC platform with zero emissions”, said Ole Kallenius, the Head of Sales and Marketing Group.
