BMW Has Introduced A New Diesel Engine With Four Turbos

The new BMW 3.0-liter 6-cylinder diesel Engine was presented at the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium. The use of at least four turbochargers allows making 394 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque in the period of 2000-3000 rpm. Interestingly, the engine is capable of producing even more torque, but the ZF eight-speed is the limiting factor.

The engine won’t likely be placed in the lower segments of the BMW family though, with the company interested in placing it in the 7-Series premium saloon range initially. In combination with all-wheel drive system, the car will accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in 4.5 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. X5 M50d, X6 M60d and the next generation of M550d xDrive will follow the 7 series flagship.

The new engine is not only become more powerful but it also is 5% more economical and cheaper to manufacture as compared with the three turbo-units. The most important change in engine’s architecture is the replacement the massive low pressure turbo from its tri-turbo engine with two smaller exhaust driven ones. BMW engineers managed to keep approximately the same weight of the motors.
