You had me at 'Hello'

The excitement for Valentine’s Day has been building here at Hand on Heart Central and today we’ve been discussing some of the best lines from romantic movies. Here are some of our favourites...

Lauran, Designer: “My Favourite quote is 'If you're a bird, I'm a bird' from The Notebook. I like it because even though they come from different worlds, they both love each other very much, and in that moment he is saying that he'd do and be whatever she wants him to be, so they can be together.”

Kate, Social Media Manager: “Mine is from Brief Encounter, which is THE most heartbreaking movie of all time. End of. Actually maybe The Notebook beats it. Anyway, my favourite quote is when Laura realises: "I’ve fallen in love. I didn’t think such violent things could happen to ordinary people." When I saw this movie for the first time, I was a blubbery wreck (perhaps it didn’t help that it was Valentine’s Day and I was single). But this is basically how I feel about love. When you fall in love, it’s wonderful but it’s also quite traumatic because you’re such a bundle of raw, sensitive nerves and scared of getting hurt. Oh, poor tragic Laura. I’m getting sad for you all over again.”

Sophie, Customer Services Manager: “My favourite quote is 'Nobody puts baby in a corner' from Dirty Dancing. It is my absolute favourite film ever and for my first Christmas with my now Hubby, (back when he was romantic) he bought me tickets to see it at the theatre in London. My best friend had also moved there and I hadn't seen her for two years, so he surprised me even more when he had arranged for us to stay with her... It was very cute.”

Ellie, Designer: “10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favourite films and one of the only romantic films I like. My favourite line isn’t so much a line but a poem that Kat (Julia Stiles) writes for Patrick (Heath Ledger). There's so much emotion behind the words, and I'm a big believer in the idea that nobody’s perfect and that you can't help who you fall in love with:

‘I hate the way you talk to me
And the way you cut your hair
I hate the way you drive my car
I hate it when you stare

I hate your big dumb combat boots
And the way you read my mind
I hate you so much that it makes me sick
It even makes me rhyme

I hate the way you're always right
I hate it when you lie
I hate it when you make me laugh
Even worse when you make me cry

I hate the way you're not around
And the fact that you didn't call
But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you
Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.'”

Amanda, Managing Director: “My favourite quote is from Notting Hill, ‘Don’t forget I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.’ Actually, scrap that it’s ‘You had me at hello.’ from Jerry Maguire. Such a perfect line. Love that film.”

Clare, Production Designer: “My fave line is from Forrest Gump because it sums up my partner perfectly! ‘I'm not a smart man. But I know what love is.’”

Heather, Product and Design Manager: “It’s not a traditional love story but Coyote Ugly is my absolute favourite film and about as close as I get to watching anything romantic. I just love it when Kevin says, ‘So tell me, what do you do when you realise all your dreams have come true?’”

Rob, Marketing Manager: ‘“WIIIILSOOOOON!’ When Hanks screams that in Cast Away, I cry every time. It reminds me of the time I lost my football as a kid.”
