Review & Giveaway: Short Row Knits by Carol Feller

We’re excited to share a brand-new book for fall by knitwear designer Carol Feller called Short Row Knits! This latest collection of 20 patterns all feature short Row Shaping techniques, allowing you to learn as you knit. Four methods of knitting short rows are covered in-depth, with thorough written instructions as well as illustrations demonstrating each step. Also included is a discussion of how to know which method is best for your project along with a photo comparison showing knit swatches of each method.

After the basics are covered, it’s time to dive into the first set of patterns to test your skills! Choose from 4 projects which are well suited to the beginner short row knitter: Sapoa Braided Bag, Frio Cabled Hat, Chirripo Short Row Ball, or the Toro Cardi with Shawl Collar (shown below).

The next section builds on the first by introducing the concept of using short row shaping to change the shape of your knitting. Directional slopes, 2-D and 3-D shapes are all covered in great detail using written instructions, charts, diagrams and photos of the resulting shape in swatch form. This section is immediately followed by the next set of patterns designed to reinforce the concepts: shawls, socks, hats, and a child’s hooded jacket are all enticing options (shown below is the Tempisque Striped Garter Stitch Shawl).

The final section covers short row shaping in garments, and this thorough section is a must for those who are interested in achieving a better fit for garments using these techniques. Raising the back of the neck, creating shoulder slopes or a curved short row sleeve cap, and adding bust dots are just a few of the concepts covered here. The final set of ultra-wearable sweater patterns are a great way to practice the techniques while building your fall and winter wardrobe. Florida knitters will especially love the Jiminez Side-to-Side Linen Top (shown below), which is knit in one of our favorite yarns, Shibui Linen!

Short Row Knits is an essential addition to your knitting library, and we’re giving one lucky blog reader a chance to win a copy of the book and a skein of one of our Purl Diver exclusive yarns, MadelineTosh Tosh Merino Light in Midnight Pass!
