Are Bushy Eyebrows Your Thing? Everything You Need To Know about Microblading

There’s a lot of hype about Eyebrows lately and it seems that big and bushy are in…or should I say back in.

Over the years, eyebrow styles have fluctuated from the needle-thin brows of the Roaring Twenties to the high-arched brows of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn of the 1950s. We’ve vacillated between natural eyebrows to heavily tweezed eyebrows and now a new trend has emerged: permanent makeup.

If you are just learning about Microblading and want to find out more, here is everything you need to know about the new eyebrow trend that is taking women by storm.

Everything You Need To Know about Microblading

What is it?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup where a brow professional meticulously draws in a full brow using a special microblading pen. The process takes about two hours because there is so much attention to detail. Each stroke is several tiny little blades cutting your skin and depositing pigment there that looks like tiny hairs. It’s like professional coloring at its finest!

First your technician will consult with you on your desired brow shape. But this is no delicate little brow—the microbladed brow gives you a full set of beautifully manicured bushes up there. During the first hour, your brow technician will draw the desired shape of your brows with a removable pencil. The next hour is spent “drawing” individual strokes one by one.

How is it different than tattooing?

The microblading process is done by hand, not machine, with a special microblading pen. The pen has very fine blades that implant pigment into the upper layers of the dermis, leaving a very crisp hairlike stroke. Because there is no needle, like in tattooing, the ink doesn’t go as deep and will fade and then disappear over a few years.

Does it hurt?

You’ll be given a topical numbing cream before you begin, usually followed by a liquid anesthetic to minimize any pain. Some patients report feeling a slight discomfort, but very little pain.

The healing process takes 25 to 30 days.

How much does it cost?

You can expect to pay between $400-$700 for the initial microblading procedure and then $200-$400 for yearly touch-ups.

How long does it last?

Microblading is only semi-permanent. Left untouched, it will last around 18 months. If you plan on keeping your microbladed brows, you have to schedule a touch-up every year to maintain the look.

Make sure you research your stylist.

Microblading is an art form, and I wouldn’t want just any Picasso using a tiny bladed pen on my brows. Make sure you research your eyebrow professional (emphasis on the word  professional) beforehand and look at several examples of her work. Read reviews, talk to your girlfriends who’ve had microblading done. And most importantly, make sure your stylist will give you your best brow shape based on personal bone structure, face shape, and personality.

The bottom line: microblading is pretty cool! You can get a semi-permanent look without the commitment of forever. If you like a fuller brow look, go for it! You will still need to pluck or wax, but a microbladed brow gives you a nice definitive line to start from.
