UNPA issued bright colourful stamps celebrating International Dance Day on 29 April 2016 attracting the attention of the large public to the art of dance.

The special stamps are in the form of miniature sheet and each miniature sheet contains six stamps.

The stamps celebrating International Dance Day features artistic representation of dances from various countries. New York issue features dance from China and Thailand, Geneva issue features dance from Sweden and Africa and Vienna issue features dance from Spain and Middle East.

The stamps are designed by some of the renowned and award winning artists, Marcos Chin (Canada), Karin Ronmark (Sweden), Alison Seiffer (USA).

Stamps Celebrating International Dance Day

On 29 April 2016, International Dance Day is celebrated all over the world, as dancers rejoice and share their passions and creativity with millions of people.

The day brings together international, national and local organizations, as well as selected individuals active in dance, both amateurs and professionals.

In 1982, the International Theatre Institute (ITI), a partner of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on 29 April on the anniversary of the birth date of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet.

The purpose of the International Dance Day is to celebrate Dance, to rejoice in the universality of the art form, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and to bring people together with a common language—Dance.

The International Dance Council (CID), another partner of UNESCO, also supports and promotes the art of dance worldwide.

Every year a message from an outstanding choreographer or dancer is circulated throughout the world. The personality is selected by the founding entity of the International Dance Day – the International Dance Committee of the ITI, which collaborates with World Dance Alliance, a Cooperating Member of the ITI.

Dance Day 2016 is dedicated to maintaining an open doors policy in teaching dance.

The artists and the designs

New York US$ 0.47 and US$ 1.15, China and Thailand, by Marcos Chin (Canada)

Marcos Chin is an award winning illustrator whose work has appeared as surface and textile designs, on book and CD covers, advertisements, fashion catalogues, and magazines.

Some of his clients have included Target, Starbucks, Google, Neiman Marcus, HarperCollins, Time, Rolling Stone, GQ, and The New York Times. In 2013 his illustration, “Grand Central Catwalk” appeared in New York City subways, celebrating Grand Central Terminal’s Centennial year, through MTA’s Arts for Transit program.

Geneva CHF 1.00 and CHF 1.50, Sweden and Africa, by Karin Ronmark (Sweden)

Karin Ronmark was born and raised in Sweden and educated at Konstfack, Stockholm, from which she holds a BA in Graphic Design and Illustration and an MA in Storytelling, Graphic Design and Illustration.

Primary influences on her work include close observation of nature, folk art and traditional art. While her final images are often digital, she develops her visual motifs and vivid colour palettes through daily explorations in her sketchbook.

Vienna € 0.68 and € 0.80, Spain and Middle East, by Alison Seiffer (USA)

Alison is an award winning illustrator and print artist based in Montauk New York. Ms. Seiffer attended the Parsons School of Design in New York where she received a BFA degree in Illustration.

Her illustration work has appeared in many national and international publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, Popular Science, Businessweek and The Wall Street Journal, MTV and Glamour.
