Mark Maker: Sevag Kazanci

We love when we meet people who are so passionate about a cause they not only dedicate their weekends to it, they make a career out of it and dedicate their life to it! Even better!

Meet Sevag, founder of Parks Project. Not only is Sevag one of the most authentic and genuine people we have met but he is super passionate about preserving our national parks and is doing everything he can to make sure that happens. Talk about making your mark. We chatted with Sevag to get a little more details about who he is.

What does a day-in-the-life of Sevag consist of?

                        – Sitting in traffic… Typically it consists of visiting a couple factories in Downtown LA, a chunk of the product that I work on for Parks Project is made within 25 miles of my home and everything we make is made in the USA, that’s a great feeling. It’s a story I’m proud to talk about and allows me to be hands on. Also it’s just fun to create partnerships that you can trust and make authentic product.

How lucky are you and why?

I feel very lucky, my friends and family are incredibly supportive of my ventures, whatever they happen to be at the moment.  I have a super supportive and amazing girlfriend. Also, my mom in my opinion one of the best Armenian cooks in the world so that’s pretty awesome.  I come from immigrant parents that worked really hard to provide anything and everything for us so I try to never take that for granted.  Plus I live in California!  Besides my car being my closest companion it’s a pretty rad place to be.

What do you consider success?

I feel like that changes pretty often for me, there’s times where it’s been as simple as hiking 3 days through the wilderness to get to the top of a mountain, but at this point in my life I’d have to say stability.  It’s also tough to talk about success without referencing Emerson, he explains it to perfection, go look it up!

What are you are most passionate about?

Getting outdoors, not having a 9-5, seeing as much of the world as I can, and figuring out how to fund the first 3 things that I’m most passionate about. Making great product that helps our parks, spending time with my enormous family, and learning as many random facts as I can.

What is the grandest adventure you have ever been on?

I’d have to say the Inka trail in Peru or Mt Whitney in California – I’m not the wildest outdoorsman but both of these trips really pushed me both physically and mentally, and they’re the adventures that find myself talking about the most.

Now you have traveled a lot… if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Cuba – I’ve always loved the music, culture, the food, and everything about the history of that island fascinates me, I am going to make it happen soon!

What Cause to you care about?

I’m passionate about the conservation of public lands like National, State, & local parks.  I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to protect these spaces since we all share ownership of them. I also just really enjoy the feeling of getting outdoors and doing volunteer work.  Parks Project organizes our own volunteer days monthly and the turn out just keeps getting better and better.  There’s something really gratifying about swinging a pick axe and restoring a trail or cleaning trash out of a river. Try it some time!

What inspires you?

Awesome brands like Best Made, Patagonia, Topo Design, Poler, Iron & Resin from a inspirational/creative side.  But my dad inspires me from a personal side, he’s one of the hardest working people I’ve ever known and I try to never lose sight of his work ethic.

What is your personal mantra?

Leave it better than you found it!

What are you doing to “Leave Your Mark”?

Creating rad product that help fund projects in our parks!  Check out http://www.parksproject.us/ for more details on what me and my friends do!
