Four Complications Caused by Water Damage

Tags: damage mold

With rainy season, hurricanes, and even major floods headed towards many this season, it’s important to keep an eye out for any water Damage that may come your way.

Even if you live under sunny skies, poorly installed pipes and other fixtures can wreak havoc. Whether or not your water damage will be covered by your insurance, it’s always a good idea to know how to spot it, so you can get ahead of the problem.

Here are four complications water damage can cause. Be sure to be on the lookout for any of these in your home!

Foundation Damage

Flooding is one of many factors that can cause foundation damage in a home. Foundation damage is a wide-ranging problem. It can refer to anything from cracks to a sinking foundation. However, even though the problem can be wide-ranging, so are the signs to catch it.

Look for a tilted chimney, uneven floors, and cracks of any size in your tile or vinyl flooring. These signs and cracking at points of stress in the home, like seams and doorways, can be an early indicator of damage.

Mold

Another nightmare complication of water damage is Mold. Mold is one problem that can pop up without a major event to cause it. Mold can lead to long-term health problems. Moreover, the subtle and dangerous thing about mold is how well it can hide. But now that you’ll be on the lookout, here are some signs of mold in your building.

First and foremost, if you notice a change in your health, check the air quality in your building. Most humans are really sensitive to mold. Many people start to have a sudden runny nose, itchy eyes, and other allergic reactions once they are exposed to mold.

Sometimes, you will be able to detect it based on physical evidence. Some physical evidence of mold in the home can be small black or green spots appearing in damp corners of the home.

Humid spots in the home are a prime location for mold growth. However, seeing those small spots usually means there is a worse problem hidden away. Make sure to keep humidity levels low and prevent standing water to limit the potential for mold growth in the home.

Fire

It may seem ironic to be talking about fire hazards on a list of water damage complications, but a fire is a surprising and true possible danger to arise after any water damage. Water damage especially that of flooding, can cause water to seep into walls. As those walls take in the water, that can affect any wiring in the walls. Often, leaks on wires will cause them to spark or short. Those wires then turn into a fire hazard.

Make sure to turn off any electricity routed to the area if you’ve had a recent flood. Then you should have an electrician inspect the area where you suspect damage. It’s much easier to solve a problem of wiring than a fire that results from the water damage.

Smells

Another water damage complication is the smell that water damage leaves behind. Whether it’s in walls or carpet, foul smells can abound after a flood, leak or any other water damage. And getting rid of a bad carpet smell can often seem impossible.

Unlike many other problems left behind by water damage, which may have clear-cut solutions, the answer to smells from water needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Consider the size of the area or object and how ventilation may or may not help get rid of the smell.

Conclusion

All major home problems can be tough to tackle, but with your eye out for these, you’ll be able to face them head on! Look for signs of water damage at all times and in all locations. Remember that your sharp eye can pay off heavily in the long term!
