Planning to expand the model range of up to at least 60 by 2020, Audi is working hard on new vehicles that will let the Ingolstadt-based automaker fill every possible niche in the automotive world. British Auto Express edition informs that one of the new vehicles that Audi will introduce is going be the four-door Audi coupe based on the A3.

The new four-door Audi will be based on the new A3 generation, and may enter the market in 2019. The coupe type sedan is, of course, a direct relative of the ordinary sedan A3, and the main differences between the two would be subtle – the new coupe coming with a sleeker side profile, a steeper roofline and sportier cues.

Like all other members of the next generation of A3, the new A3 will also be driven on the upgraded version of the universal “Volkswagen” MQB platform. Lightweight materials and aluminum are going to be used more widely in the design of the concept, which would make the car about 110 pounds lighter.

The A3 is expected to become slightly larger and have some trickled down tech from the incoming A8 flagship, as well as plug in hybrid and even possible EV versions. Let’s recall that the A8 itself demonstrates the second generation of Audi Virtual Cockpit, a new system for autonomous control, as well as, possibly, plug-in hybrid version of the E-tron, which could in the future “descend” to the all-electric A3.

If Audi A3 Coupe actually goes into production, the main rival of the coupe, in the market, will become Mercedes CLA. By the way, Mercedes is also preparing a new vehicle, which would be the answer to Audi A3 – a sedan based on the A-Class.
