Getaway Blog Hop featuring Winter Park and Dot to Dot

Disclaimer:  The fabrics, thread, and batting for this project were provided to me at no cost by Island Batik, Aurifil, and Hobbs.
Hello and welcome to my little corner of the Island Batik Ambassador's Getaway Blog Hop.  This is the final project for the 2018 group of ambassadors.  It's been a wonderful year.  I'm looking forward to another inspiring year as an Island Batik Ambassador in 2019.

The new Island Batik fabric collection I received to make my Quilt was Winter Park.  It's a beautiful collection of blues, greens, beige, and yellow with winter woodland designs.  Deer, trees, pine cones, and snowflakes play well together in this collection.

Here's the quilt I made, Dot to Dot. I used every fabric from the Winter Park collection along with an Island Batik coordinate, Custard for the backgrounds of the blocks and the outer border..

I used a plain muslin fabric for the backing of my quilt.

This quilt features three different blocks and 288 circles.  There are eight of these blocks.

There are four of these blocks, plus four opposites of this block.

I used Aurifil thread in a dark blue (second thread on the left) to zigzag stitch around all 288 of the circles.  I must be crazy, because I so enjoy stitching around applique shapes.  I could easily have continued zig-ing and zag-ing along for another day or so.

Each block has 18 circles made from 18 different fabrics.  I tried to arrange the fabrics in the same pattern for each block.  After putting the blocks together, I'm not entirely sure I succeeded, but I like the overall effect.

When I think about the block theme, Getaway, this quilt reminds me of a queue at an amusement park.  You know how you go through the line and it looks like you are nearly there, but then another turn comes along, and you realize the front of the line is actually a long, long, way off?

Alternatively, if you were to "Getaway" to my area of the world you would see the lovely rolling countryside of northern North Carolina.  You might visit the Quilt Trail of the Tar and Roanoke River, go camping at Kerr Lake, or see my town's annual vintage car show in October.

I did lots of closely spaced straight line quilting on the Dot to Dot quilt.  It seemed like it took forever to quilt.  This may be my last straight line quilting for a while.  I've enjoyed experimenting with my walking foot for the past year, but it feels like time to quilt some curves again.

I tried the Cotton Wool Blend Tuscany Collection batting by Hobbs for this project.  I've never used a wool blend batting before.  It gives the quilt a really warm feeling.  I'm going to test out the warmness of this quilt tonight, as we are preparing for a cold snap with temperatures expected to dip into the teens.  The wind is picking up as I write this.

The quilting lines look so pretty on the front and on the back.

I bound the quilt using the same Custard fabric as the outer border.

A toasty warm quilt and a porch full of firewood.  I'm ready for the cold weather.

One last pretty pic.  Now for giveaway time!  I'm giving away 5" charm squares cut from my leftover Winter Park fabrics.  One of each fabric I have remaining to sample and inspire you.  To enter scroll down and leave a comment below.  Let's make it interesting...what is your favorite Getaway?  I'll select a winner by random number drawing.

Thanks so much for visiting today!  See below for a list of all the blogs participating in the Getaway blog hop.  Today is the first day of Week 3, but you can still go back and visit any blogs you may have missed to see all the new collections of Island Batik fabrics and be inspired by the other Island Batik Ambassadors.
