Preparing for an Emergency

Preparing for an Emergency creates a line of protection during uncertain and scary times. Whether you face a flood, fire, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, or other natural disasters, having a plan in place can be the difference between life and death.

Preparing for an Emergency

The purpose of this article isn’t to frighten you about the what if’s of natural disasters, it is to help you prepare, just in case the unimaginable happens.

Lately, there have been several natural disasters happening around the world. Seeing the devastation can be very frightening. But instead of panicking, we need to be prepared. So, let us use that fear to fuel a plan of action.

No matter where you live, every Household should be prepared for an emergency. The question is, where do you begin?

Let’s take a look at how your household can prepare and survive an emergency situation.

Plan of Action

First, you need to create a plan of action. To start, gather the following information to make an Emergency Card.

  • Name, address, and contact information for places of work or school locations.
  • Names and dosage information for any medications household members are prescribed.
  • Email addresses and phone numbers of anyone you will need to contact including neighbors, family, friends, and doctors. Don’t forget to jot down your home address for younger kids who may not have that information memorized.
  • Any special dietary needs.
  • Pet information and medical needs if applicable.

Type up all of this information, print it out, and use a laminator to seal the paper to make it waterproof. You will want to make a copy for each member of the household. They can keep the information inside of their car, backpack, or purse. Make an extra one to put into your emergency kit as well.

Next, you will need to set up locations to meet with your family during an emergency. Since a disaster can strike at any moment, you will need to accommodate the plan for different times and days of the week.

  • Decide on a location within your home to meet, such as a basement, bathroom, or another safe spot.
  • Decide on a location to meet within your neighborhood for times that household members would be in the area during an emergency.
  • Pick a location to meet within your town in case family members are out and about when an emergency strikes.
  • Finally, when traveling out of town, make sure you pick a location to meet up in case anyone gets lost or there is an emergency.

Everyone in the household needs to know the plan of action, especially when there are changes. Make notes on your Emergency Card so everyone knows where to meet up. Make changes as necessary and update the card when needed.

If you have children in the house, copies of your emergency card should also reflect any information they have on file.

The next step in being prepared in case of an emergency is to build an emergency kit. We’ll help you build your own unique and custom emergency kit that fits the needs of your family.
