D.I.Y Singing Bell Craft Project

Throughout various cultures around the world, bells have historically held a multitude of meaning and purpose. Bells symbolize beginnings and endings. They are rung at weddings, funerals, during meditation and to raise our vibrations. Bells warn us and call our attention. They commence fights and finish them, and alert us of livestock movement. Bells inform us of guests and signal the readiness of palate pleasing nourishment. Simple soundful metal craft for some, sacred singing Bell for others, these handcrafted creations have served communities for thousands of years.

A form of unspoken communication, bells are often associated with the expansion of consciousness. They continue to represent the ‘voice of God’ in Christianity, act as a catalyst for Spirit communication  in China, and directly address deities in Buddhist, Hindus and Russian Orthodox ideologies. Within these same spiritual paths, bells have also been linked to superstitions. As such, notions of bells protecting people by warding off evil spirits still exist today. Ancient sages also made the connection that the dome of the bell is the ‘vault of heaven’ and the clapper is the ‘voice of the divinity.’ The Hindu Goddess, Saraswati, the bringer of knowledge and wisdom, is associated with the bell as well.

It is said that the reverberation of the bell is used to help worshippers disengage the mind so that it becomes receptive. In Islam, this reverberation is used to describe the sound of the revelations of the Qur’an, and in Buddhism, the “sound of the golden bell” is an analogy for heavenly voices. The sound of the Sacred Singing Bell is a reminder that, like the sound, the world may be experienced, but not possessed. Pagoda roofs sometimes have hundreds of tiny bell hanging from them, symbolizing, in sound, the concepts of the Buddhist laws as well as frightening away any malicious entities. For the same reason, the church bells of Christian churches, at onetime, were peeled not only during processions or as a notice of a ceremony or service, but also during thunderstorms to chase away demons.

With so many secular and spiritual meanings surrounding these man-made musical creations of metal, is it any wonder why so many welcome their presence in their homes and sacred spaces. While the sounds and symbolisms alone are enough to subdue or enhance one’s mood, its uniquely crafted embellishments add to the power of bells even more. From ribbons and colorfully painted-on designs, to floral adornments and intricate bead-work, personalizing such a cherished emblem has a way of deepening its value even more.

The notion of this rang loud for our fabric store co-owner Sabina, who upon discovering an antiquated bell that silently called to her at an antique shop, decided she had to have it for her outdoor living space. A creative herself and a weekend hostess to friends and family, her home is filled with conversation pieces and unique creations crafted by her hands and others as well. An avid DIYer, instead of purchasing ribbons to replace the rope for hanging, Sabina quickly turned to her stash of fabric scraps to bring added charm to the bell’s already magnetizing character. A few moments later, her finished sacred Singing Bell found its place somewhere between Heaven and Earth.
