MacKenzie Childs Inspired DIY Home Decor

Inspired by the whimsical and quirky stylings of MacKenzie Childs, the mixing and matching of complimentary palates with contrasting prints offers a baseline theme to build creatively on in this inspiring layout featuring stripes, plaids, and polka dots in a pastel color wave.

Vibrantly hued accents are like candy for the eyes! Orange and pink polka dots provide a playful contrast to both the granny apple green /white swirls and the black/white stripes. An accent table goes from so-so to so-fun when embellished with rickrack-bordered fabric on top and coordinating print on the drawer facing. A no-sew striped pillow cover offers an added comfort to a seating staple. Accented with black beaded trim, the flirty lampshade in pink/white offers is share of feminine charm. For eye-catching artwork that can be hung on a wall or placed on a tabletop, fuse your choice of fabric onto an artist canvas and applique a flower in the center.

Ready to try your hand at recreating the look?

Check out these tips and DIY project sure to have you drinking in the beauty of this refreshing room every time you enter it!

Tip #1

When coordinating fabrics, make a swatch book to take with you on your shopping adventures. It will make matching fabric, trims and paint choices so much easier.

Tip #2

Use suction cup hangers on the windows to display the appliqued floral prints. You don’t have to mar the window trim and they’re easily concealed by the shade.

Tip #3

An electric staple gun is a good investment when considering doing your own upholstering. You will be surprised at the home projects that can be done in general with this tool.

Tip #4

Use clothespins to secure fabric/trim on lampshades until glue is dry.

DIY No-Sew Striped Pillow Project:

Supplies:

  • (4) 19″ squares of fusible web

  • (2) 19″ squares of striped fabric

  • (2) 19″ squares of muslin

  • 3/8″ wide fusible web tape

  • 1/2″ wide velvet ribbon

  • polyester batting

  • 2 1/2″ diameter fabric-covered shank ribbon

  • large decorative button

Steps:

  1. Fuse web squares on the WRONG SIDE of both fabric squares (do not remove backing).  Cut each striped square along the diagonals to make (4) equal triangles (8 total). Remove paper backing

  2. Using triangles with matching stripe direction from each set, arrange (4) triangle pieces on each muslin square. Fuse in place then trim to 18″.

  3. Fuse web tape along center on WRONG SIDE of ribbon. Wrapping the ends to the back, fuse ribbon in an “X” over the raw edges of triangle on each square.

  4. Use pillow front and back to make a Basic Knife Edge Pillow

  5. Pulling the thread tightly to “tuft” the pillow, sew your button to the center of the pillow.
