We lift the lid on this popular product, we take a deep look at its all natural formula to determine wether Meladerm really does live up to its claims.

Our review does not simply re-hash the marketing claims by its makers, or the numerous testimonials available online.

Our research and conclusion is based on solid clinical evidence, after studying numerous scientific trials.

hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces too much melanin

What Is Meladerm Pigment Correction?

hyperpigmentation cream from Civant

Meladerm is a naturally formulated skin lightening cream.

It corrects uneven pigment in the skin to provide an even and lighter skin tone.

It is formulated with 12 natural clinically researched skin lightening compounds.

Meladerm contains no risky ingredients such as Mercury or Hydroquinone.

These are known to cause irritation and other unwanted side effects in some users.

It’s certified as cruel free and its all natural formula is 100% suitable for vegans

Who Makes It?

Meladerm is made by US based Civant Skincare. They are based in Warrenville, Illinois.

They have a dedicated toll free customer service telephone number which is (888) 3-CIVANT

Formed in 1999 with the sole intention of developing an effective skin lightening product.

It is used to reduce hyperpigmentation and other causes of dark patches on the skin.

They developed Meladerm over a period of many years.

It was originally released in 2004, the result of numerous clinical and laboratory trials.

Does Not Contain Hydroquinone

It hit the headline at the time of its release as it was one of the first products to not contain Hydroquinone.

This is a popular lightening ingredient that can be found in numerous skin lightening and bleaching products.

Available in OTC creams ( with a maximum of 2% concentration) it is also found in stronger prescription type skin lightening products too.

Hydroquinone has been a controversial ingredient over the years.

It has been proven to be very effective at lightening the skin.

It has been prescribed by dermatologists to treat hyperpigmentation and Melasma ever since the 1950’s.

The downside with it however, is that it can cause some side effects.

These include extreme skin dryness, redness and irritation.

It can also make the skin extremely sensitive to sun light.

It has been blamed for cases of exogenous ochronosis ( darkening of the skin).

More recently there have been claims that it is linked to some types of cancer.

These reports have made the FDA reconsider the licensing for hydroquinone to be sold OTC.

But as of yet the final decision has not been made.

At time of writing it is still legally available to buy.

How Does Meladerm Pigment Correction Work?

In simple terms, Meladerm works by reducing the production of melanin in the skin.

The main reason for hyperpigmentation, is excess melanin production which is caused by overactive melanocytes.

These are cells are responsible for producing melanin in the skin.

Think of them as the factory, storage and delivery trucks that make, store and deliver melanin to the skin cells.

They are found in the lower part of the skins layers (called the epidermis.)

The melanin produced is packaged into melanosomes which are then transported to regular skin cells (keratinocytes).

Here they provide the skin with its colour and also help to protect the skin from the suns UV rays.

Meladerm works to reduce the manufacturing of melanin by inhibiting the chemical process through which melanin is produced.

This process starts with an enzyme called tyrosinase which oxidises the amino acid tyrosine to produce melanin.

By reducing this natural skin whitening process, and disrupting the melanin producing cycle, the skin receives less melanin.

This means that any new skin cells as they are produced are lighter in colour.

Meladerm contains proven tyrosinase inhibitors including Vitamin C, Beta Arbutin and Kojic Acid.

While on the subject, let’s take a look at the full formula in Meladerm.

The Formula In Meladerm

Meladerm has been formulated with 12 key ingredients.

  • Bearberry Extract ( Beta Arbutin)
  • Kojic Acid
  • Emblica Fruit Extract
  • Citric Acid
  • Niacinamide ( Vitamin B3)
  • Licorice Root
  • White Mulberry Root Extract
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate ( Vitamin C To You And I )
  • Alpha Arbutin
  • GigaWhite
  • Symwhite®
  • Sepiwhite

Looking at these in more depth:

Bearberry Extract (Beta Arbutin)

Taken from the Uva ursi plant ( meaning ‘Bears Grape’ in Latin).

The extract contains a natural compound derived from hydroquinone called Beta Arbutin.

Clinical research has shown that this has anti-tyrosinase properties.

Two separate studies have demonstrated that it can reduce cases of Melasma.

However these results can not be considered as definitive, with the need for further studies and tests required.

Kojic Acid

Extracted from mushrooms, it is a powerful anti tyrosinase inhibitor that helps to reduce the amount of melanin being produced in the body.

In addition it is also a powerful antioxidant that reduces the harmful effects of free radicals.

It heals the cellular damage caused by pollution and other toxins found in our environment.

There have been a few studies, although we have to say, with mixed results:

A study in the Indian Journal of Dermatology compared 4% hydroquinone with a mix of 0.75% Kojic acid and 2.5% Vitamin C as a treatment for melasma.

The results were rather disappointing with the high strength hydroquinone proving to be more effective.

A 2010 study compared high strength 4% hydroquinone with a formulation of Kojic acid, glycolic acid and embolic fruit extract in the treatment of facial dyschromia.

The results showed that both treatments provided similar results

A third 2013 study mixed 2% hydroquinone with 1% Kojic Acid.

The lightening results were very favourable, especially when compared to the results of using the two products separately.

Emblica Fruit Extract

Taken from the Indian gooseberry plant ( latin name phyllanthus emblica).

It has been shown that when used at moderate concentrations, it has significant skin lightening properties.

There are two studies involving Emblica fruit extract.

Significantly both of these saw Emblica mixed with other ingredients including licorice root, belides, Kojic or glycolic acids.

When compared with 2% hydroquinone, the results were equally as good, and much safer.

Citric Acid ( Lemon Juice)

Lemon juice contains Vitamin C, Vitamin B3 ( as niacinamide) and citric acid.

It’s not advisable to just apply lemon juice onto your skin as it can cause irritation and dryness.

The citric acid in Meladerm is used to help exfoliate the skin, and reduce the PH of other skincare products

Licorice Root Extract

Taken from the plant glycyrrhiza glabra.

It contains two key extracts that can help reduce hyperpigmentation

The first and probably the most crucial is glabridin.

It has been shown in trials to be some 16 times more powerful than Hydroquinone

The other is called liquiritin, it’s recognised for its ability to provide an even skin tone by ensuring that the distribution of melanin is more constant.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

An active form of Vitamin B3, it’s found in vegetables and yeast.

It too has the ability to whiten the skin

However it works in a slightly different way to the other ingredients that reduce the action of the tyrosinase enzyme.

It helps to stop the transporting of melanin to the skin cells.

This means that less melanin is available, leaving the skin looking lighter.

Clinical trials have been very conclusive, showing strong positive results when used to treat skin discolouration

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate ( Vitamin C)

An absolutely essential skincare ingredient, with numerous great benefits:

It has anti-tyrosinase properties which means that it reduces melanin production.

It is an effective anti oxidant that reduces the damage caused by free radicals.

Vitamin C all promotes the production of collagen, reducing fine line and reduces the appearance of acne scars.

White Mulberry Root Extract

Taken from dried mulberry leaves, it has been a fixture in traditional medicine for hundreds of years.

One double blind study carried out in 2011 compared a placebo against a 75% mulberry extract used in the treatment of melasma in patients.

It was shown to provide significant improvements.

Alpha Arbutin

A chemically modified form of beta-arbutin, that has shown powerful results in laboratory tests and trials.

The makers (Civant) sponsored a study that proved that it’s more effective than regular beta arbutin when used to treat age spots.

Symwhite®

A powerful antioxidant taken from pine bark extract.

Its makers tell us that it’s considerer to be as equally as effective as Kojic acid as skin lightener, its also safe too.

GigaWhite

A proprietary blend of 7 Swiss grown alpine plants including Mallow, Peppermint, Primula veris, veronica officinalis, melissa officinalis and achillea.

It has a significant anti tyrosinase properties that can help provide significant skin lightening benefits

Sepiwhite

Taken from an essential Amino acid called phenylalanine.

This compound is known to inhabit the production of melanin from the hypothalamus.

Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in dark patches can often be seen over a 2 month period

What Are Its Benefits

Meladerm uses a natural formula to gently lighten dark patches.

It also smooths away the appearance of acne scars and reduce other forms of pigmentation.

This includes birthmarks, freckles and melasma.

It’s free from harsh ingredients such as Hydroquinone and Mercury.

It works alongside the bodies natural skin renewal cycle.

This process forms and pushes new, lighter skin cells to the surface as the older darker cells die and are sloughed away.

Meladerm Pigment Correction Side Effects

Despite its effectiveness, Meladerm is not without its potential for causing side effects in some users.

These could include:

  • Redness.
  • Irritation.
  • Itching.
  • Dryness and peeling.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Worsening of darkening (common at first).
  • Increase sensitivity to the sun.

When using Meladerm, always do a patch test first.

Put a small amount on your wrist or forearm and leave for 24 hours just to make sure that there is no adverse effects..

It’s also essential to use a good quality, broad spectrum sun screen of at least 30SPF and preferable 50SPF.

Sample User Testimonials

“This product has taken years off of my skin. Sun damage and aging had caused a ‘raccoon effect ‘ around my hairline and eyes. I also had dark pigment which made it look like I had a moustache. I was ready to get laser surgery.

After 2 weeks of using Meladerm my facial skin looked noticeably so much younger and clearer. I realized after a couple weeks that I was using less and less concealer and foundation!

This is the best product I have ever used. It has increased my confidence by making me feel better about my appearance.”

Anon Reviewer – Australia

“This product CHANGED my life. I suffer from hormonal cystic acne.

I am 30, recently I have buckled down on my skin care routine.

My scars would not let up; I exfoliated everything I could.

THEN I started getting a black shadow above my lip.

I researched and ordered Meladerm. My first bottle is almost gone…… my acne scars are almost gone as well as my upper lip shadow. I just ordered two more bottles.

I will use this product for LIFE!”

Billie – Texas

“I’ve tried so many different cream for my melasma that I have had for 5 years.

None of them actually worked, and I didn’t even noticed a small difference until now.

MELADERM IS THE BEST ! They do not lie, you will see first result in two weeks, and my melasma keeps reducing every week !

It’s been now 2 months that I have used this product twice a day, and my melasma is almost gone !! Thank you !”
