The Great Lakes Mystery

Hello! I hope you all have your year off to a great start!

I’m gonna start out trying to catch up on a few things I got behind on last year (I hate having to do that, but it needs to be done to make myself feel better!) Can you even believe I have things to carry over? Haha!

One of those things is releasing the pattern for The Great Lakes Mystery!

Last year, the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild celebrated their 10th anniversary, and they asked me to design a monthly program just for them to help them celebrate. I was honored to get to do it.

We ran it as a 9-month mystery program, and we wrapped it up in October, so now that the mystery has been revealed, I’m releasing the pattern to the general public. And it’s a good one, if I do say so myself!

I’m gonna show you some quilts, but here’s the great thing about this pattern:

  • The way it looks when finished is totally up to you! YOU are the designer, and YOU get to decide what size it is, what colors you use, and how to put it together!

And that’s not the amount of work it sounds like. I make it super easy for you. It’s just that if you use this pattern, you will end up with a one-of-a-kind quilt because no two quilts made from this pattern will ever be alike, unless that is planned on purpose.

So here are a couple that I made . . .

This one is 80″ x 100″, and uses Ruby Star Speckles fabrics.

Here’s a close-up:

And here’s what I put on the back. I quilted it with a pantograph called Loophole.

This one is 60″ x 80″, and uses all sorts of scraps.

Here’s a close-up:

And here’s the back of this one. I quilted this one with an all-over medium meander.

See how different they both look?

Depending on how you make your units and put your blocks together, you can also get a myriad of secondary designs going on all over your quilt — it’s so fun and interesting to see how they come together.

After the mystery was over, a couple of the guild’s participants sent me some pictures (I wish you could see them all — they were all fabulous, and I was so impressed!), so here are a couple more quilts made from this same pattern, yet they all look so completely different!

This one is by Kim McCool. I love her use of black.

Here’s a close-up so you can see her colors better and a bit more detail of how she set her units.

This one was made by Diane Oaks. I followed her progress on this one on Instagram, and I was in love with her colors from the very start. She used purples and grays, and it just came out so great! She also planned her layout to give some definite designs in her quilt.

The guild members’ projects ranged from table runners to wall hangings to queen-sized quilts, ALL from this one same pattern!

So now that you’ve seen some ideas, and the mystery has been revealed to the guild, the pattern is now available in my Etsy Shop, if you, too, want to have fun designing a one-of-a-kind modern quilt for yourself. Furthermore, you can use the pattern over and over again, and never come up with the same design twice — it’s that fun! I’m seriously thinking about starting another one in yet another size for myself.
