DIY Embroidered Basket Planter

I found this wool rug at the thrift store a couple years ago. It wasn’t in the best shape and had holes and tears here and there, but I just loved the colors and pattern. This rug was pretty big and I cut it up and used it for several different projects. This DIY Embroidered Basket Planter might just be my favorite though. What you need: Wool rug or throw, embroidery floss/needle, scissors, Since I’ve used this rug for so many projects, I had a few pieces to work with. I traced a circle for the bottom piece of my planter. You’ll want a piece of fabric that’s long enough to fit around the circle. I used colorful embroidery floss to stitch two pieces together to get a long enough piece. I lined up the edge of my fabric to the bottom circle piece and started stitching together. When I finished with the bottom, I stitched the two meeting sides together. I folded the top of the basket down and stitched together for a nice, finished look. Now it was time to add some decorative stitching. My embroidered basket planter was taller than I needed, which is nice because the top can be rolled up or down to fit any size plant. I have never been great at keeping plants alive, but read that umbrella plants are low maintenance. If you like this planter, you might also like these other DIY home decor projects made with rugs. These repurposed rug ideas are a great way to change up your home decor for very little cost!
