Today is World Honey Bee Day, but that is not the only reason I have bees on the brain : )
Have you watched any episodes of NBC’S new show, Making It? Etsy is a big sponser of the show and I have been getting Etsy emails for months about how cool the show was going to be. I confess that I imagined being a contestant and could hardly wait for the first episode.
WELL, the show is out of my league! I would have failed at the first task which was to make a 3D representation of “your spirit animal”. WHAT???? I asked my husband who was watching the first episode with me, what would I make? He started at me blankly. LOL The only animal I identified with was a bee which 2 other contestants chose. However no ideas popped into my head until the next day….then I was filled with inspiration a full 12 hours too late: I could have made a Queen Bee Crown!
Step One: Cut out a piece of window screen 24″ x 12. Fold up the bottom in two folds. (So the base has some thickness.)
Step Two: Using white glue, glitter each crown point with gold or black glitter.
Step Three: Sort decorating possibilities, necklaces, and any pretty shapes
The Clear Rhinestone didn’t stand out.
I got this black rhinestone choker at Claire’s Clearance sale for $2.00!
This was my favorite look, but it was too heavy!
Step Four. Cover the base of the crown with scrapbook paper for a pretty foundation for decorating.
Step Five. Put a 24 inch strip of 3/8 lip cord on the bottom
Step Six. Fold the edge of a 5″ wide and 26″ long piece of burlap under and Hot Glue the top edge to the top of the crown base (where the glitter pieces and the screen meet.)
Step Seven. Now fold the bottom edge of the burlap under and hot glue to the lip cord so you have covered all the inside with burlap.
I found this bee tin at a sale last weekend and I cut off the base with my can opener.
Then I cut out the bees with wire cutters. I actually only used three of the bees so I have leftovers! The fun part is decorating which is trial and error. I just use what I have and play with this and that. I liked the gold braid at the top of the scrapbook paper and used hot glue to add the gold plastic beads. The final touch was the Scrabble letters that are edged with Ranger Gold Stickles.
National Honey Bee Day is an awareness day for the bees. The event was started in 2009 by beekeepers of the United States to promote and educate public about the bee industry. This event is annually observed on the third Saturday in August. So Happy Honey Bee Day!
