Play with Warm and Cool Colors

By now, we know what are Warm and cool Colors. Colors like yellow, orange and red are warm as these colors remind us of the sun. The cool colors like purple, green and blue give a cool feeling. These colors are also on the opposite side of the color wheel and they give a sharp contrast to the painting when used together.

Many artists have experimented with using cool and warm colors. One such great artist is Paul Klee.  Here we visit a contemporary Dutch artist who plays not only with these colors but also uses fragmatic style to create an abstract landscape. Schulten was born in Ootmarsum, Netherlands.

I am sure you remember the fragmatic artist we visited while painting flowers. His name was Kees Van De Wetering. This somewhat gives a feeling of cubism as the painting breaks along these lines. Ton Schulten uses vertical lines created fragments in the art creating a unique style of painting.

Ton Schulten Art Lesson

Let us see how Ton Schulten has beautifully painted these landscapes using lines and warm and cool colors. The composition is created more with horizontal lines. The vertical and horizontal lines create a mosaic-like landscape where blocks of color create the illusion of light and shade. His unique style of painting has been coined ‘Concensism’.

We will need:

Canvas, acrylic paints, and some acrylic paint brushes.

We create a simple landscape with houses and trees. The shapes of the subjects are created more like geometrical to balance with the lines we will draw later the divide the area.

Create the area of focus which will be the brightest. The brightness is created using colors like yellow, orange and red. Make this area almost in the center. We now draw the contrasting areas around it to bring the bright area more in focus. Use blues with the base colors to get darker shades.

Have an understanding of colors to use next to each other.
