How to paint a cat

Paint a Cat. Many artists find it interesting to Paint cats because of its shape and its flexibility. One time the cat can be painted geometrically and the next moment it can be painted as a blob all cuddled up.

Here we take a look at few artists who love to paint cats and each of them paints in a different style.

Shozo Ozaki

Shozo Ozaki, an artist from Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, Japan, loves Painting cats in the traditional Sumi-e style. Sumi-e, also known as suiboku-ga is the traditional ink wash painting of the far East where the artist uses the fewest possible lines and shapes to bring out the texture and effect. So each stroke is important and all unnecessary details are eliminated. The marks brings out variations of tones of black in thoughtful brush movements.

First, we should know about the different brush strokes for Sumi-e painting. Watch also the video on painting the cats in this style.

Shozo Ozaki cats are drawn with minimum brush strokes and then thin soft lines are used to complete the painting. The cats are in different positions and he also uses colors other than black to paint them.

So it is time to try out painting a cat in Sumi-e style. Children above age of 7 should try his style.

Objective

Paint a cat with minimum strokes, using tones of a single color.

Process

I have used acrylic paints here but diluted it enough so that it behaves like watercolor. Before you start painting the cats, draw a few cats in different positions till you are comfortable drawing them. Then wet the paper in the form of the cat. Be careful not to wet the paper out of the imaginary outline.  Remember also not to put blobs of water on the paper. While the paper is wet, slowly add the black fluid paint on the wet area and watch the paint flow. It will form beautiful tones of the paint. If you want another layer of highlights, let the base color dry and then again wet it again with a brush.

Gerard Dansereau

Kat Mandou is the name of the series of joyful cats that we see in many of Gerard Dansereau works. Gerard Dansereau is a contemporary artist from Quebec, Canada who uses vibrant displays of colors in his abstract expressions.

What we are interested here is Gerard Dansereau Kat Mandou series. These cats have almost human-like expressions with big eyes and subtle smile. The shapes of the cats are very geometrical as against the cats of Shozo Ozaki’s cats we saw before. Even the background is geometrically patterned.  Since his paintings are abstract and he uses mixed media.

Objective

Use primary colors and white to create your painting.

Process

Use the three paints red, blue and yellow to create your background. Experiment with them mixing and merging till you feel satisfied with the painting. Then paint the white cat. Complete the painting. Because of the white, the cat stands out in the background.
