Geocache: To hide in the woods

I had some extra minutes during my weekend and I decided to use the new duck Tape I just brought back from Memphis.

Camouflaged for the woods
I saw this duck tape used on many geocaches in the USA, so I was sure it is something easy to buy, but I could not find it any stores. On my last trip to Memphis I decided I will look into many different and cheap stores as well. After three days searching I finally found one and only one roll in a dollar store. Now I have the brand, it is duckbrand.com. I visited their site and could not find this pattern anywhere, so I'll have to keep on finding this in dollar stores I guess. If you know any better source do not hesitate let me know.

So here is what I used for the above two geocaches:

Materials used
The tape itself is not the best glued one, but with some help it sticks perfectly. What I did was to put that wire around the neck of the containers then cover both fully with the duck tape starting at the top and bottom and then around.

Wire on the neck glue on the cap
After putting the wire around the neck; I put some glue on the cap, that helps to stick the tape on the cap. It is not a step that must be done, it is more of I want it last longer so let me help the tape a bit. All geocachers will twist the cap off and on, so that will be most used. On the bottom I did not use any extra glue.

Half of the cap taped
As you can see one stripe of the tape is not enough to cover the full cap, so I had to put two stripes. When you camouflage a cap as well it can be any color, this is important as if you buy petlings without caps and you collect the caps, which makes sense as you are reusing caps which is better for the environment. So for such hides I always use up the caps that I cannot really use anywhere, like bright colors or pink.

Top and bottom taped
After the top and bottom was taped the camouflaging is almost done to this new geocache. Some extra hints, have a sharp knife or cutter handy and cut into the tape at the points where it would otherwise stick to itself and that would be weak points.

Almost done
I taped around the bottle with one stripe of tape, which could be done more efficiently if you want to save some tape, but that would also mean more cut pieces more places for mother nature to interact with your geocache. Keep in mind I want to place it out to the woods and have it there for years to come.

Wire covered with tape
As the last step in camouflaging I applied some tape on the wire that will be used to hang it on a tree. Now that all properly camouflaged a few more things to do.

As I had glue on the cap I need to wait till it dries, then cut above the neck so it'll open nice and easy and also the wire is more protected. But while it dries I can already prepare a logbook and some goodies for trade items. I prefer to put all in small plastic bags with zippers so that when the kids come and find they are in good shape and clean.

As the last step it needs to be placed out to the woods at a perfect hiding spot for many geocachers to come and find. They will log things like I do:
  • ... oh, after I found it it was easy and trivial ...
  • ... good that it was not smaller ...
  • ... if I ever go to any woods I'll take more geocachers so we find it faster ...
  • and many more to compliment (or complain, but actually what they will all mean is thanks ... )
