FIDE World Chess Cup 2021 – Participants list

The FIDE World Chess Cup 2021 will take place in Sochi, starting July 10, 2021.

Out of 206 players taking part in FIDE World Cup 2021, a large portion earned their spots through Continental events, allowed to be organized in hybrid or online formats. This is the first time in the history of chess that the World Chess Championship cycle participants are decided in online events.

The event will be played as a knock-out tournament, with a total prize fund of almost 1.9 million dollars.

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen will play the FIDE World Cup 2021. Magnus last played in the 2017 World Cup, when he got knocked out by Bu Xiangzhi in Round 3. Since the reigning world champion already qualified for the next Candidates tournament, he plays the event to reach the title that he didn’t claim before.

However, Carlsen’s challenger in the World Championship match, Ian Nepomniachtchi withdrew from the World Cup, explaining that he needs to prepare for the match.
