How to Make College Paper Writing Exciting: Tips and Tricks

Writing is an inescapable reality of college. If you’re a natural writer, then this might not be an obstacle to you. For the rest of us, Writing can sometimes feel boring, tedious, and frustrating. Here are some helpful tips to make Essay writing a little more fun and a little less stressful.

Use Simple Language

You might be thinking, “How does this make writing more fun?” I understand your confusion. But think of it this way. By using simple language, you can write how you speak. You will be able to let the words flow naturally instead of spending hours trying to find the most impressive language. This will make the process less stressful. And, bonus, your Paper will be more engaging to readers.

Use Active Voice

When you write in active voice, you give the power to the subject of the sentence, not the object. For instance, you would say, “And then, Brutus stabbed Caesar!” instead of “And then, Caesar was stabbed by Brutus!” Active voice sounds better and gives your paper more energy.

Spend Some Time on Your Thesis

You will have a far more enjoyable time writing your paper once you have a clear path to follow. There is no worse feeling than trying to write a paper and having no idea what you’re going to write about. So, take some serious time to form your thesis.

Avoid Clichés

As you write, do your best to avoid clichés. Phrases like “a pain in the neck,” “fits the bill,” and “good things come to those who wait” have no place in your essay (or any writing, ever). They are predicable, boring, and way less exciting than any words you can create to say the same thing.

Pare it Down

Words like “this,” “that,” “some,” “to be,” and other words or phrases that are repetitive or unnecessary. Once your essay is written and you’re ready to edit, a fun first step can be to identify and eliminate all these extra words.

Write the Body First

The body of your paper matters more than the introduction or conclusion by a landslide. Don’t worry about the intro or conclusion at all. In fact, you can just pretend that you don’t have to write them at all. Focus your attention on the thesis and your main arguments.

Writing.com

Writing.com has a plethora of resources to help you write your essay. From sample essays to blogs and articles, you’ll definitely find something helpful for your project.

Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor scans your writing to find any sentences that are too long or difficult to read, so you can rewrite them in a more succinct way.

Answer the “How?”

Most essays tackle the question of “what?” or “why?” There is nothing wrong with this method, but these essays are a lot less interesting (and a lot less fun to write) than essays that answer the question of “how?”

Start small

If the paper seems overwhelming, start with just five original sentences. Just five! You can do that or sure. You might find that those five sentences spur you on a creative path to write even more. If not, at least you have a start!

Choose a Topic That Intrigues You

If you choose a topic that lights you up, you’ll do better research, find more interesting information, and actually enjoy writing the paper.

Write the Introduction Last

The introduction is supposed to tell the reader what you’re about to tell them. How will you even know that if you haven’t written the essay yet? Not only does it make more sense to write it last, but you’ll also whip it out a lot faster.

The next time you are assigned a paper, rest easy knowing you have the tools you need to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Happy writing!
