The Metaphysical Conceit | Its Uniqueness

Making Sense: Intellectually than Intuitively!

#classactivity ❤️

As part of our discussions today in class, on the metaphysical conceit, and how it is different from the Petrarchan conceit, or from the metaphor, or from the simile or from the analogy - we had a short and exciting activity in class today.

Students were given a brief introduction to the ‘comparative cousins’ from the ‘literary devices’ family, and then they were challenged to create their original, innovative illustrations, for one of the most extraordinary literary devices that’s been ‘adorning’ poetry all through the ages – the literary conceit!

I was so happy to see students coming up with some really extraordinary examples of conceit, in their own ingenious, humorous, impactful and delightful ways!

Here goes a few excerpts from their creative ways with the conceit –

Love is like a second-hand Maruthi. If it works, it runs forever, otherwise good luck starting it!

Wedding is like fusion of two metals in a really high temperature, protecting the individuals concerned, from future damages.

Life is like owning a cat; one moment you’re playing with it, the next moment it has stolen the milk.

Arrogance is something like stray dogs who prefer to jump in front of you as you start driving!

My sister is like the water

That’s kept in the refrigerator overnight!

Cold as ice!!!

My love life is like catching a ghost through a butterfly net; it slips away just when you think it’s easy.

My friends tell me I am like a unicorn. Always delusional, chasing rainbows.

Rufus sir’s class   - Joker’s wig

The Joker’s wigs have different colours, all combined into one!

Similarly, Rufus sir’s lecture deals with knowledge, and creativity, all yoked into fun.

Kappa Biryani – Chandraayan 3

As a Malayali, it’s hard to find a good kappa biryani in Chennai. But when it touches my tongue, the whole taste buds celebrate like Indians celebrated Chandrayan 3’s landing on the moon.

iPhone – Dung Pit

The dung pit is a mixture of all nutrients, pesticides and fertilizer for agriculture. It’s like the iPhone which is a mixture of better camera, performance, and display, which is the best in the market for a mobile phone user.

She stands before the sea

Expecting for a cold wave,

Later, she discovered it’s the heat wave

Unaware of the hunger and depth of the sea.

Relaxation became realization

Hunger not only for humans,

Even, the creation undergoes it.

Friend – Fragrance

Love – Ocean

Chapathi – Strongest

Branches – Decisions

Friends are are like fragrance – they smell unique and different; each one teaching us different lessons!

Love is like the ocean. An ocean of commitment, before going into it. It is like if you know to swim, jump into the ocean. Otherwise don’t!

Chapathi – denotes my preparation; before eating it, first break it. I dare!

Branches are like the decisions we take! Not all decisions lead us to to success!

Which is like, not all branches give fruits but some. Likewise, some decisions give the most beautiful chapters of our lives.

Life is something that cannot be explained or it does not have a definition as well as Nature. We can predict life but somethings in our lives always remain a mystery like a cloud!

Clouds, when we look at it, it stays in one point, or sometimes it moves, and sometimes we create an image out of it.

The life of a child begins with tears, a cry. Clouds also shed tears as humans we call it as rain.

Each life has its unique purpose; likewise, each tree or plant has its unique purpose to its life, and a reason for its existence.

Life is beautiful; the journey is like a small seed that grows into a huge tree. Even though it took time it has showed its growth. As a kid we cannot define or understand the beauty of life – as we grow old, we will find the beauty of life.

Everytime the key pierces the bosom of our core,

The lock opens different shades of our love.

Impediments push through the same hole

Again and again, drifting us to different poles.

Your Love - Like a letter send without a sender's name I don't know who it belongs to!

People – of the world are like mixed fruits in a Salad bowl.

Silence – You are like an Atomic Bomb which gives a destructive silence.

You – Your presence is like a cloud which is seen - but you get near, it just dissipates into air.

My Love is like Blood

Within a healing wound

At your thoughts, like

Unceasing, picking fingers

It spills out first

Then overflows!

My Love for you is like a heartworm

It boxes through my heart bit by bit

And leaves me in perpetual agony.

My father is like a moon who gives me light even in the darkness.

My mother is like a camphor who would just burn like a camphor for the sake of us.

My love is like stepping in the moon, which is really quite hard to do so!

My nephew looks like a bundle of joy and happiness but he is a school of adventure, torment, and playfulness all rolled into one!

Commitment in relationships is like spectacles/glasses used by a man to improve one’s vision. The relationship appears to be blurred if it’s not supported by commitment. Commitment, hence, is a necessity in relationships as only it can give an extended view of that relation.

The still and serene ocean is like her constant demeanor.

She is universally steady. How?

Perfect in every way.

Regardless of her occasional temper like that of a Queen’s rage.

She is astonishingly eminent!

Who is she?

She looks at me with those sound shiney eyes earnestly like those two perfectly formed clear crystal balls.

I am cornered by her gaze. We locked eyes.

She let out a ghastly grumbling sound.

Who is she?

She is my cat, Twinkle.

She wants food.

The sea without waves!

And the life without risks

Are same as without beauty

In fact the life is a roofless house

Its height are till the sky;

But wearing masks again and again

One loses the real face of his life!

“MCC is like a hot pot of biryani”

Just like a pot of biryani, MCC looks the same like any other college. But as you dig deeper, you find chicken pieces and boiled egg! So to know the college fully, one has to dig deep and taste it entirely. And of course, the ‘hot pot’ for the illegal heat of Chennai!

Lack of Creative Ideas – My mind’s silence rests in my ivory skull;

I.V.Fluids – The current flows through my veins

Like the glacial icy waters, quench the ocean’s warm waves of thirst.

A box of Sweets – The best of good cheer and company become the flavours of a dozen sweets enclosed in the most plastic of sweet boxes.

Blocked drainage pipes – The pipes and drains of my sinuses are as unpleasant and stuffy as the blockage of drainage pipes on the worst of days.

Mother’s Affection – Mama’s touch are the serve of a dozen summer butterflies that infuse their nectars into my dopamine …

Ed Sheeran’s music – an ointment for the wounded heart; the candle in a romantic dinner.

Of Jackfruits

My Love is a jackfruit.

Her thorns prick but not like roses.

Her sweetness is buried in webs of sticky latex,

Pods of affection well worth their labour.
