What is CLAT Exam?


CLAT or Common Law Admission Test which is a national-level law entrance examination conducted annually for LLB and LLM admissions across India. CLAT is conducted on a rotational basis by 19 National Law Universities for admission to various law universities in India including NLUs. The first CLAT was conducted in the year 2008 by National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. CLAT 2019 official notification will be released in the 3rd week of December 2018. It is one of the premier law entrance exam in the country along with All India Law entrance exam – AILET.

CLAT exam is expected to be held in the 3rd week of May 2019.

Mode of Answering


CLAT exam will be an online computer based examination only.

Medium of Examination


CLAT test will be conducted in English language only.

CLAT 2019 will be conducted by National Law University Odisha (NLUO), Cuttack. (tentatively)

CLAT 2019 Eligibility Criteria


The eligibility criteria for CLAT test involves the following clauses based on the stream applied for.

Undergraduate Programs (UG)


Educational Qualifications

In the case of Unreserved/OBC/Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories, candidates must have secured a minimum of 45% marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2) and 40% marks in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST Categories.

Aspirants who will be appearing for the qualifying exams in March/April 2019, are also eligible to apply for the law entrance exam, provided that, they have to submit their passing certificates on the time of admission.

CLAT Age Limit

There is no upper age limit for appearing in CLAT exam 2019. 

Post Graduate Programs (PG)


Educational Qualification

In the case of Unreserved/OBC/Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories, candidates must have secured a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., LL.B/Five Year Integrated LL.B (Hons.)/other equivalent exams) and 50% marks in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST Categories.

On the date of admission the candidate must have passed/ appeared in the final semester/year exam of the qualifying examination.

CLAT 2019 Application form


CLAT 2019 Application portal is currently closed.

Students can only apply online for CLAT 2019, no online forms will be available.

The application forms are expected to be online from 1st week of January 2019.

CLAT 2019 Fees


The exam fee for CLAT 2019 form has been tabulated below:

The fees can be paid online mode or offline mode.

Online: Net-Banking /Debit card /Credit card /pay wallet /RuPay etc.

Offline: Generate challan and pay by cash in the relevant bank. Challan can be generated only from 1st week of January 2019 to Last week of February 2019.

Additional bank charges, if any, have to be paid by the candidates.

Documents to be uploaded


  1. Photograph: 200 x 230 pixels (preferred), file size: 20KB- 50KB, Format: JPG or JPEG.
  1. Signature: 140 x 60 pixels (preferred), file size: 10KB- 20KB, Format: JPG or JPEG.
  1. Scanned copy of the certificate to claim as Specially Abled Persons (SAP) (if applicable)

Application Process


  1. Go to http://www.clat.ac.in/
  2. Select the tab “Apply Online”
  3. Register using E-mail ID and Phone number
  4. Log in using the generated Registration number and password
  5. Fill the application form
  6. Upload Photo, signature and relevant documents
  7. Select preference order
  8. Payment of Application Fee
  9. Submit the completed form online.
  10. No hard copies are to be sent to the CLAT office.

Admit card


CLAT 2019 Admit Card will be available from the 3rd week of April 2019 and can be downloaded before the exam date.

The admit card will be available and can be downloaded only from the official website http://www.clat.ac.in/

Examination Pattern


The CLAT exam pattern for both UG and PG programs has been described below:

UG Question Paper


The CLAT 2019 question paper will be of objective type (Multiple Choice Questions) in nature. There will be a total of 200 questions.

Each question carries 1 mark. 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Exam Duration: The duration of the exam is 2 hours or 120 minutes.

The test comprises of five sections: English including comprehension, General knowledge and Current Affairs, Mathematics, Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning.

PG Question Paper

The test comprises of three sections: Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence and Other Law Subjects (Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law etc.)

Results


CLAT 2019 results and rank declaration will be published in the last week of May 2019 on their official website.

In case of ties, the candidate will be selected on the basis of:

  • higher marks on legal aptitude in CLAT 2019,
  • Higher age and
  • computerized lots.

In case of PG admissions, only two criteria will used.

Cut Off


The CLAT 2019 cut off will be released after the declaration of results and is subjected to change with each university which will be available on their respective websites.

Counselling


The CLAT office will conduct a centralized online counselling for admission in UG and PG programs in the participating Universities of CLAT 2019 after the results are declared. Seat allotment will be based on “merit-cum-preference” which means the CLAT rank, candidate’s order and category preference in the application form, and the number of seats will be taken into account for giving admission. The entire procedure will be updated in the CLAT calendar which will be available on their official website http://www.clat.ac.in/
