Indian Engineering Services (IES)/Engineering Services Exam (ESE) is a recruitment exam, conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The exam is the yardstick for recruiting class – 1 Engineer officers serving in various departments under Govt. of India. Date of Examination

The ESE 2017 (Preliminary) exam was held on 8th Jan. 2017 while the main examination was conducted on 14th May 2017.

Medium of Examination

The language medium for ESE 2017 was ENGLISH, irrespective of the exam stage.

Expected Vacancies Available

As per sources, around 450 vacancies will be available in ESE 2017 examination.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality: An aspiring applicant must either be:
  • an Indian citizen, or
  • a subject of either Bhutan or Nepal, or
  • a Tibetan refugee who came to Indian before 1st Jan 1962, or
  • a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or any East African country or Vietnam.
  1. Age Limits: A general category applicant must be at least 21 years of age, but should not be more than 30 years of age as on 1st Jan 2017.  Following age relaxations were applicable for ESE 2017 based on corresponding categories:
Category Relaxation
SC/ST/ J & K residents in between 1st Jan 1980 to 31st Dec 1989. 5 years
OBC 3 years
Defense service personals disabled during hostilities Up to 3 years
Orthopedically disabled/ Hearing Impairment/ Blind Up to 10 years.
Ex-serviceman including commissioned officer/ECO/SSCOs who have served the military for 5 years as on 1st January 2017 and released or their service period has been extended and are eligible to apply for civil employment Up to 5 years
 

 

  1. Minimum Educational Qualification: Candidate must be in possession of a degree in engineering from a recognized university, located in India or Foreign.

OR  

Candidate must have qualified section A and B of the Institutions Examination of the Institution of Engineers (India).  

OR  

Applicant must have passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India).

OR

The applicant must have passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India.

OR

The Candidate must have passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959.

  1. Physical Standards & Medical Examination: Candidates who will qualify the 3 stages of ESE 2017 have to undergo a medical examination.

Also, it is required of the candidates to comply with the physical standards mentioned in the Information brochure released by the UPSC.

Engineering branches available in ESE 2017 

A total 4 branches of engineering were admissible in ESE 2017.

  1. Mechanical Engineering.
  2. Civil Engineering.
  3. Electrical Engineering.
  4. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.

How to Apply?

Application Fee

The application fee towards ESE 2017 examination was Rs. 200 for a general category candidate. However, no application fee was charged from SC/ST/PH and female category candidates.

Candidates were supposed to pay this application fee via one of the following methods:

  1. Cash deposition at SBI branches.
  2. Net Banking facility of SBI and associate banks.
  3. Payment through Debit/Credit card authorized by Visa/MasterCard.

Documents Required during form filling

  1. Scanned photograph – JPG format – 3 kb – 40 kb in size.
  2. Scanned Signature – JPG format – 1 kb – 40 kb in size.

Application Procedure

The application portal for ESE 2017 (Preliminary) went live on 28th Sept. 2016 and was shut down on 26th Oct. 2016 (6:00 PM).

In order to apply, applicants had to go to link www.upsconline.nic.in. The steps of filling the form were available on the aforementioned website.

No Hard copies were to be sent to UPSC at any stage of application. 

Admit Cards

Preliminary Exam

The admit cards for ESE 2017 (Preliminary) exam were published on 9th Dec. 2016. Candidates had to download them from the link www.upsconline.nic.in.

Main Exam

Admit cards for ESE 2017 (Main) exam were published on 18th April 2017. The link for downloading the admit card was https://upsconline.nic.in/eadmitcard/upsc_ac2/admitcard_enggm_2017/.

ESE 2017 Exam Pattern

Preliminary Exam 

The ESE 2017 (Preliminary) exam comprises of 2 papers – Paper I and Paper II.

Paper I or the General Studies & Engineering Aptitude Exam is a 2 – hour long objective type test carrying a total of 200 marks. The paper I is basically meant for testing candidate’s knowledge of general topics such as current affairs, qualitative & quantitative aptitude etc.

Paper II is a branch-based exam of 3 – hour duration. It carries a total of 300 marks and is also in an Objective type format. The Paper II of ESE 2017 (Preliminary) exam is used for testing candidate’s knowledge of the chosen branch of engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/ECE/Civil).

Main Examination

 The main examination of ESE 2017, also, has 2 papers – Paper I and Paper II. Both of these papers are based on the subject/branch of engineering chosen by the candidate.

Both, Paper I & II of ESE 2017 (Main) Examination, carry 300 marks each and are of 3-hour duration each.  Both of these papers are conventional in nature.

Interview

The final stage of ESE 2017 examination is the Personality Test, conducted in the form of an interview. The test carries a total of 200 marks with no fixed cut-off. The personality test is basically meant for checking the leadership qualities and other social skills of an individual.

The final result of ESE 2017 will be produced by combining the results of all three stages of ESE 2017.

Results

Preliminary Exam

The results of ESE 2017 (Preliminary) test were officially declared on 23rd Feb. 2017. Candidates can check the results on the link https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByEJv3aS1zOneXVnVGtHTktqUzQ/preview.

Main Exam

The ESE 2017 (Main) examination was held on 14th May 2017. The results of the main exam are expected to be published in the month of June 2017.

The final result of ESE 2017 is expected to be out in August 2017.
