How to deal with COMLEX

Many Osteopathic medical students, without having a balanced strategy in mind, pull up their white coat sleeves and get to cram everything and anything they can get their hands on to. However, you do not really need to top the exam, only qualifying for next level can also do. However, whatever your enthusiasm may be for this exam, here is a little game plan designed on how to study for COMLEX.

Switch on that red light NOW:

Whether you are going to take the COMLEX level exams in between June-August or at the end of this year, it is about time to get serious with your prepping. The level 1 exam is tougher than the other two followed up level exam later in COMLEX series. They say if it takes 3 months to prepare for level 1, then it will take 3 weeks to prepare for level 2, and only 3 days to prepare for level 3. So get your head in the game already.

Divide and conquer:

The COMPLEX level 1 exam covers almost everything you have learned in the first 2 years of your Medical School. However, it is not exactly, about what you learned in medical school. Primarily it focuses on the Basic Concepts of medical science. Almost similar to USMLE step 1, it has Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in addition to the subject list. Considering the hefty syllabus, it is better to approach the syllabus in this order:

  1. Scientific Understanding of Disease Mechanism
  2. History and Physical Exam
  3. Management
  4. Diagnostic Technology
  5. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

Get online medicine:

Now that you know which spot in syllabus to touch with the attention as sharp and concentrated as a needle, it is time to get your hands on the operation table. There are a number of online help like question banks, eBooks, lecture notes and tutorial videos for you to consider for the next stage of your preparation. Start practicing as many questions as you can. Be in your own comfort zone as well under real exam scenarios too.

Review your report:

After you have solved the questions, it is time for a quick check up round. Only solving questions will not enhance your study level. A constant check on your mistakes and working under pressure is the real deal. Reviewing your solved questions can help you understand the basic concepts with more depth. Question banks and online mentor facility with a chat-to-chat relationship can guide you why a particular answer is right and other options are wrong.

Simply put, as the size of the syllabus is huge, it facilitates examiners to wander for the variety of questions they can put in a multiple-choice format of paper. So only way, you can expect a clear-cut success is by going through as many questions as you can in your preparation period.
