You Think Something As Simple As Eating Broccoli Can't Fight Osteoarthritis? Then Read This

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. This degenerative joint disease (DJD), is caused by a
loss of cartilage (tissue that makes up our joint and allows it to absorb movements, so that our bones don’t rub into each other) and resulting in the development joint inflammations.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include joint pain, swelling and stiffness.

The joints in the arms, knees, back and feet are the ones most commonly affected by the disease.

After this brief introduction to osteoarthritis it’s time to move to the main topic of this post- one of our favorite superfoods – broccoli, can be used to treat this unforgiving joint disease!

It turns out that according to University of East Anglia scientists, broccoli are great for people with osteoarthritis and should be included in the treatment of the disease. These results were acquired through 3 different laboratory studies.

These studies showed that a compound known as sulforaphane, also found in cabbage and Brussels sprouts, helps switch off genes that have a destructive effect on cartilage.  Another way sulforaphane helps protect the joints is by suppressing the growth and development of a dangers pathogen (a microorganism causing infections) called Helicobacter pylori. This pathogen is responsible for inflammations and ulcers, and as I mentioned above, osteoarthritis and joint inflammations come together.

The scientists are uncertain whether eating broccoli could be enough to reverse the effects of osteoarthritis, however, they are certain that it can prevent its progression (or its development to begin with).
