5 Myths About Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a Chronic Disorder which is characterized by musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, memory and sleep issues. While there is no known cause or cure, this disorder affects approximately 3 to 6 percent of all Canadians and the government is constantly updating their guidelines when it comes to treating the condition. All of our HealthMax Physiotherapy Clinics have trained professionals that assist in treating and managing this Chronic Disorder. Today, we examine 5 myths surrounding a common yet misunderstood chronic disorder

Fibromyalgia is the same thing as arthritis

While some of the symptoms may be the same, arthritis is a conditioned caused by inflammation and joint damage while fibromyalgia has no known cause. The condition also affects sleep, memory, and the attention span while arthritis solely affects joints. While the two disorders are often compared; they are not the same disorder. The condition is also linked to anxiety and depression, however, studies are still being conducted to determine the correlation.

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, then you should not exercise

Many people believe that exercise intensifies the pain, however, studies have shown that exercise may limit the effects of fibromyalgia. According to a 2014 study by the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, researchers found that patients who participated in resistance-based exercises were in less pain than those who did not exercise. The ones who participated in physical activities also saw improved function over time. This study tells us that those who suffer from the chronic condition should still lead an active life. Find a routine that works out for you and embrace the healthy and active lifestyle!

Fibromyalgia only affects women

While the majority of those diagnosed with this chronic disorder are women, an estimated 10-20% of all diagnosed cases of fibromyalgia affect men according to the National Institutes of Health. Many believe the misconception that men cannot be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, however this is inaccurate. Researchers still do not know why the disorder affects more women than men, but you should know that men could indeed be diagnosed with the disorder.

The pain is all in your head

Unfortunately, the most common misconception surrounding fibromyalgia is that it is a “fabricated” disorder constructed by the mind. Many believe that the pain is all in their head, however this is false. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that both the brain and spinal cord process pain very differently for those who suffer from fibromyalgia.. Scientists discovered that patients who were diagnosed with the disorder were reacting stronger to pressure and were more sensitive to pain. While there is not much we know about the disorder, we understand that fibromyalgia is a neurochemical issue.

There is no treatment for fibromyalgia

While there is no known cure for fibromyalgia, there is plenty of science-based evidence which suggests that this disorder should be managed and treated. Movement therapy, yoga, and ancient Chinese medicine have all shown promising signs for those who suffer from the disorder. For example, a 2013 study published in Rheumatology International found that movement therapy improves sleep, fatigue and anxiety issues for those who suffer from the condition. With the proper treatment, this chronic disorder may be managed and symptoms may decrease.
