Tooth decay. A condition that can be prevented

Tooth Decay is a common condition that occurs at any age when the acid in the mouth dissolves the outer layer of the teeth ( enamel) and leaves the dentin vulnerable. This problem is also known as dental caries or dental decay and although the number of persons who suffer from it has decreased over the years, it is still one of the most spread health issues in the world.

Signs and symptoms

Tooth decay does not show any symptoms until it is too late and it has reached an advanced stage. Common symptoms of tooth decay are:
• Tooth sensitivity (manifested in pain or tenderness when you eat or drink something sweet, cold or hot)
• Toothache
• The presence of brown, grey or black spots on your teeth
• Unpleasant taste in the mouth
• Bad breath

It is best to try to prevent this condition, but if any of these symptoms has manifested, attempt to see a dentist as soon as possible. If left untreated, dental decay can lead to problems much more severe, like cavities, periodontal disease and dental abscesses (when the nerve in the teeth dies, and it becomes infected resulting in a collection of puss at the base of the tooth’s root).

The best moment to see a dentist

A toothache is one of the first warnings that something may be wrong. That is when it is best to see a dentist if the symptoms have shown. If you ignore this problem, then your problems could get worse. You can even end up losing your tooth. Regardless of age, anyone can fall victim to tooth decay. That is why frequent dental check-ups could save you from suffering from dental cavities and other problems.

Preventing tooth decay

Brush your teeth regularly, at least twice a day for two minutes with an ADA approved toothbrush and toothpaste and use mouthwash and floss daily. The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends only the products that are in conformity with the regulations and are tested to ensure their antibacterial and tooth protective efficiency. In addition, for a better prevention of tooth decay, try to cut down the sugar levels you ingest with foods and drinks, especially before bed. During the night time, the tooth decay process is enhanced.
It is best to see a dentist at least twice a year for routine check-ups, plaque removal and to resolve any newly appeared issues. This is the best way to try to prevent tooth decay.
